So.... do we leave to up to police to catch and charge all these petty criminals?

The front end staff used to play a role in checking for theft, I used to work at Big W and checkout lanes have mirrors so staff could look for items people put at the bottom of their prams.

With the loss of front end staff, a critical barrier to theft is removed.

You can call police, but they may or may not catch them! Ditto theft of anything.

Most of the supermarkets here in Jakarta have a person in the fruit and vege section that weighs your items and then they are tagged with the barcode.

So not much room for the switcheroo at the checkout. Granted they don't have self serve as labour is cheap.

So maybe as they saved money on checkout staff they could put a person back in the fruit and vege section to pre- weigh and still keep the self serve section clawing back on some of the theft.

    Win win!!

Theft is still illegal regardless of your thoughts on the victim.

Thats a great idea... it assists with managing store shrinkage, it will make the front checkout faster (no need for people with less expertise to fumble around trying to recognise what each product needs to be), it would get positive feedback as a customer service... what's not to like?

Who do you call when the insurance company steals your money? Don't fall for that "policy" BS

Yes, I first thought it was a bit of a pain and had no idea of the process but now find it really easy. Much quicker and also stops the grape grazer throughout the rest of the shop ;)

If I stay on your Airbnb and clean the place out cab I use the same argument then? Would you have brought it on yourself?

It's a risk I take, there is a security deposit that I have though and with airbnb you can claim for damages incurred. I've been compensated each time - Guests pay up as guests don't book anonymously.

I don't believe 'honesty has disappeared' from society Marg.
Those that don't abide today, probably wouldn't of if born in a previous generation either.

Sad to see so many arguing otherwise, I.e., that supermarket theft is ok.

I'm definitely not one of them saying it's ok.

No you didn't argue that it's ok but you did argue that the supermarkets brought it on themselves. It's the justification of the crime I don't like. I have seen justifications for many crimes I don't agree with. Such as, she was yelling at me, she had it coming. Or another where certain people wearing certain clothing were asking for it. Victim blaming and providing justifications for perpetrators of criminal acts is just wrong. Just like stealing and assaulting people is wrong.

Ok. So if I leave my front door open everyday when I go to work and someone just comes in to take something? I think responsibility does lie with me on that.

Coles and Woolies need to be smarter than the people trying to get a cheap dinner... we all pay for the theft.

    Marg,
The most prevalent theft I see today is not at the supermarket checkout, nor the petrol station drive off.
Its a theft of Company time used on social media/personal internet use.

But I'm no doubt opening a different can of worms with that statement with some.
