From my experience as well, when I invested in the sharemarket, I was watching the stocks daily to get 50% growth and that gave me more stress than having a property that grew 80% in 4 years. Lowering and managing risk in property I think is easier compared to the sharemarket because we have more control over our asset rather than letting a company determine this for us.

Good point Citystar. I would also add its easier for the average person to 'manipulate' an asset (property) to manufacture growth.

Personally for me, I really want to be a hands on father later on when I have children. Also, at the same time as other people mentioned having the freedom to do things on your terms is excellent. I know one of my friend who was working to pass time and one day his boss upset him badly. So my friend packed his stuff and said see you later!

Like most I want to live life on my terms and for me that means having the ability to travel, not necessarily in style but for a long time and not have to cut it short, be concerned about where the next meal is coming from etc etc. I want to be able to spend as much quality time with the people that I love whenever I want to do that. I have a huge world to explore and I won't be able to do that with just 20 days annual leave, thank you very much Mr employer. I want to watch all the films I like, back to back in a great cinema room in my own home surrounded by family and friends and have the sort of huge family get together Christmas's that you see on films.

Life is too short to live any other way so this is not a "nice to have" list. It is essential and so I will become succesful on this path, somehow, not without bumps, knocks, scrapes and a few costly mistakes no matter how long it takes.

I like property as a driver for this as it is something I have a certain amount of control over, can learn the formulas and strategies, choose one, adopt it fully and master it and become succesful. It isn't a maybe, its a basic formula which works, simple. It is not a business I have to hope will work out somehow, the rules seem simple. To quote Tony Robbins.. " Spend less than you earn and invest the difference"

I am at the early stages of this path although it is one I have been looking at for around 16 years or more. I am 37 and want to have the option to retire by 46. Not sure exactly how that is going to happen yet but I know it won't happen unless I take action.

1 PPOR and one IP. Saving for IP #2

2002 I started investing so I could be financially independent. It meant taking some financial risks. (ie out of my comfort zone). It was absolutely worth it. Goal achieved. I learnt a lot about myself through the stress, struggles and tears. Reading other investor journeys is really encouraging when you are going through your own challenges. Even though I am in NZ property challenges are universal. You just have to deal with them.

    Cheers

I work in a corporate environment and observe the behaviours of people everyday. Occasionally I get a pleasant surprise but mostly I'm disappointed by people who are selfish, untalented and unprofessional. I call some of these people Snakes in Suits (based on a book I read years ago), and are basically psychopaths who are allowed to work in senior positions with almost no redeeming qualities or traits. The place I work at now isn't "too bad" and I'm lucky enough to have a good group of guys (mostly) in my team. I really like the technical work I do.

For me this is about associating with people I chose to associate with and to give myself and my wife options for the future when I decide to exit the corporate environment. I would absolutely love to one day have enough IPs for my wife and I to manage full-time. I can already see my knowledge increasing and with that I find myself openly passing this information on to others (as I've done in the past with other areas I am more knowledgable in). The thought that I might someday offer advice to someone that they benefit from really excites me.

Man I love reading stuff like this.

One of my ongoing goals is to constantly step out of my comfort zone, challenge myself, learn and grow. One of the wisest decisions I have every made!

Why do you Invest in Property?

Cos it's easy to do and the rewards are good.
I like creating stuff too, so all our 13 IP's have all been self developments.

OMG I have got to read this book...... sounds like some people I know :(

Like most have said, I invest in property to give me the options for financial freedom.

I currently work 4 days a week and I'm attempting to cut down my hours to 3 days per week if I can replace 1 day of my income.

From a young age I was always obsessed by houses, floor plans, layouts etc. So for these reasons I still love property. I'm also an analyst/dev obsessed with data of any kind, and property has looooots of data :)

Why? Because it gives options. Options to work....or not, options to travel, to do what you want to do when you want to do it.

Most people don't enjoy working 8H * 5D *48W *45Y at the same thing, in the same place with the same people. For most of us, property Investment offers the best opportunity with the lowest risk to escape that and live a life of relative freedom.

Would have answered the same but I'm positively geared. It's only the negatively geared people keeping them out right?

It started because i didnt want to retire on the pension. ive always liked houses though. i kept going because it is fun and rewarding. i wish i knew it was this easy years ago. And i have really changed snd grown as a person. i have met many inspiring and fascinating people that i would have never have met if it wasnt for property investing.
so the overall goal was to have enough income to not have to work. almost there.
