Its funny. My granddad would say there is a sucker born everyday. Now my dad says there is a sucker born every second.

A lot of people are happy to pay for convenience.

My ring was 3k from the US. The same ring (slightly smaller centre stone, less detailed setting) was in an ordinary jewellery store here for 10k so probably 11-12k for one that's exactly the same.

Yes, they invest lots on marketing and 'brand equity'.. You bet there is a return on that...via sky high mark-ups of course.

Yep, and convenience costs big time. Especially for illiquid stuff like gems and jewellery.

We are talking 50% over in some cases, depending on size of diamond costly exercise

I say let people buy what they like and stop being so judgmental and superior about it. I've used second hand diamonds or broken up old jewellery and had rings made in the past by a manufacturing jeweller.

I see buying jewellery from "name" brands as similar to buying expensive handbags, shoes, cars etc. Some people just see value in things I see no value in.

    Viva la difference...

    Not really big dollars though.

Not unless you are getting up into the two or three carat range, and I doubt people buying that size would be worried about cost, or would understand how to get better value.

    Right got it
yes I was referring to larger rocks, makes a massive difference/savings. I paid around 50% less for my ring by sourcing stone and I saved around 40k, and it did matter to me. Knowledge is about being able to interpret GIA cert and dimensions of the cut

In terms of smaller stones cartier - you will pay double, could be 10k rather than 5k. Still could be significant $ for some?

However, I could be wrong but perhaps Cartier will somehow hold its value? Not sure? It Does when it comes to their older/antique jewellery, watches

No doubt the brands like Cartier and Tiffany hold.valurs better. One big reason for that is trust- this is an industry full of people like dastardly and mutley (especially on internet sites)so trust is important, even though the fair value of the actual material may not be much.

I believe Because of the selection/grades of diamonds they sell. Like you said be prepared to pay a premium for this.

I guess if you dont know anything about diamonds you will easily get ripped off anyway with an inferior diamond. retailers spin a story and in the main want you to pay too much

Perhaps cartier in the long run may be a better option ?

    Lol!

I would normally say she should offer to give it back but given the circumstances, I think she should have it made into a tiara for Brad.

Your insurance company might be getting little nervous, depending on how often you are near drains and toilets...

I'm so glad that I never have to worry about diamond rings ever again in my life!

What a waste of time it was researching the bogus four Cs, getting the diamond and then getting the ring made.

Sounds like you are upset about the relationship more than the ring?

I would say the opposite is true. A lot of us find all the fluff and judgements and showing off about weddings etc rather repugnant. Sorry.
