What to do if you have a perfectly good, fairly new split level aircon that you don’t use? By way of background. There is a monster 9.5KW aircon in the living room. Great brand. Works well. Not really used. In last 2 years used 0 times. Ceiling fans seem to be more than enough for the living room. Due to its size it’s impractical to relocate it anywhere else where it could be used more regularly (like a bedroom). Just leave it to collect dust?
PPOR or IP? What city? Bear in mind that my hubby could very easily live in Brisbane without reaching for the aircon, whilst I couldn't live without it (even though we don't use it a whole lot). People have different tolerances for heat and humidity, so removing it is taking away something that the next owner or tenant might really enjoy. I'd run it once a month regardless of whether you need it or not.
Brisbane and its PPOR. Agree, tolerances are different. But seems we all enjoying Brisbane no problems without aircon, occasional humid nights with bedroom aircon excepted.
and Thought about it. But Google doesnt seem to provide anyone who would buy an already installed aircon...
I believe you would be shooting yourself in the foot if you remove air-con in Brisbane. We have had potential tenants refuse a rental back when we didn't have air-con in our IPs. It has a value, and if you don't use it, I'd keep it and run it occasionally to keep it in good condition. We've had a very cool summer, so we've hardly run ours this year. But when it gets back to "normal" for Brisbane you are going to wish you'd left it there IMO.
I am looking to to repair or replace an old 8kw aircon unit. The contractor offered a different used one a few years old less than half price of a new one.
Is the suggestion to run it monthly ‘to keep it in good condition’ advice from a manual? In Melbourne it would be very common for air cons to be unused for many months. Especially if not used for heating. In my view, not running them (unless needed) would be better because it keeps dust out if the filters…
It is common sense to give them a run . It is not going to put dust in your filters running it for a minute. You need to run it to circulate the gas to stop your seals from drying out ,gas escaping, to stop the bearings seizing up, keep the belts in good condition flexible and even and to blow dust and wasp nests out they can make a racket when the fan is hitting them. Dust attracts moisture sets hard overtime and causes rust. Even switches can get oxidation on them and have poor contact if not used. Same principal as with vehicle aircon you need to run them every few weeks in winter if you dont want your seals to dry out let gas escape and reduce efficiency.
Google said So based on that shouldn’t be an issue. The aircon has not been used for 2 years and I tried it today seemed fine I still think it probably should be switched on every now and then. To keep the lubricant “fresh” I guess. I’ll switch it on twice in summer for half an hour each. Think that should be enough. EDIT: @Ruby Tuesday already covered it! Didnt see the reply
