I saw this at a property, and it's located where the property's sewer gets flushed out when looking at the Sydney Water sewer service diagram. Is it possibly where the sewerage gets dumped then pumped into the main sewerage pipe? Or is it something else?

They have smart meters for water. Is this a smart meter for effluent?

    very unlikely it is sewerage.

looks like a pump-out pit for the stormwater. it has a float switch.
is this under the house or basement.
it could have been installed to remedy a stormwater issue or groundwater seepage.

Yes, it was under the house.

It does look like a stormwater pump. I'm guessing the presence of this indicates the property could flood during heavy rain? There were some indications that the basement had flooded before

Definitely a stormwater pit with pumpouts.

How far below street level is the garage/basement?

The garage/basement is actually at street level. The property slopes upwards though towards the back.

    Yes, it's a sump.
Likely not enough height to gravity flow it to the stormwater pipe in the street.

The concern also that this property had been subject to some flooding/overflowing and hence this measure. So, it could happen again. Not to mention a haven for all sorts of pests as residents.
