How much more should one of the neighbours pay to have the palings on their side?
Assuming the default position is 50/50 how is that modified by having the beautiful side posts and beams visible? what would be fair?

None .. I actually once paid for the whole fence myself and chose to have the palings on my side as it gives you bit more space specially if on the side of the house.

Only downside of having posts on your side is that you will need to put wedges if you ever use boundary fence as a pool fence.

Do you mean you chose to have the posts on your side? Would give more space than having the palings unless I'm using the wrong words?

If you are using a timber fence as a pool fence, you'll need to ensure wedges are installed even if the rails are on the neighbour's side.

Not in NSW as long as fence is 2.1m high on your side.

In my case, I just didn’t want to burden my 80 years old neighbor on a pension.

That's a bit odd isn't it. Kids can climb up a high fence and fall down 2.1m onto your pool deck.

They could break a bone or drown, or both. o_O

There are always risks and they have to draw a line somewhere. There have been incidents where neighbours put their trampolines next to the fence and kids were able to jump across with or without wedges.
