Some franchises and independent businesses simply run their course, based on the trends/technology of the time. There is a shelf life, it seems, and unless they evolve they die. I think the franchises that are currently struggling are Aust Post shops, anything to do with DVD/CD music stores and the usual assortment of food outlets that are on skinny margins and can't keep up with the demographic needs of the areas they work in - the whole healthy food industry is one that is gaining in popularity (look at Boost as an example). Interesting times.

Looking the other way, what franchises have excelled, stood the test of time?
Jimmy boy always seems to stay ahead of the pack, but got to keep on top of the market.

I mean $5 for pizzas for most days of the week

Franchisees are struggling. You really need no businesses debt or have the youngest possible staff working at all times.

They are not bad just at the moment they are far from been worthwhile from a profit aspect. Two years ago people were paying $2.95 on average more for a pizza. When it gets back to that its party time :)

I think you guys need to Google DMP:ASX and see just how 'badly' Dominos has performed in the last 5 years or so:

A bit volatile recently. A double top is a bad sign for some. And 6% drop yesterday.

Golf ball cleaning franchises are incredibly dodgy. You keep getting kids diving into the water traps and selling a bucket of balls to the pro for less than the cost of a six pack of balls.

at $50 a pop for a drug test. remember these have to be lab-grade tests to stand up in court. 100 tests a day. $25000 revenue a week. i reckon there is money in this. more companies are driven by insurance companies to reduce liabilities/premiums.

have we become so void of original ideas and gumption that such a large % of the population who want to work for themselves/have their own business in some capacity automatically go to franchises first?

Agreed @sanj - whilst some of us were setting up the chairs, holding open the doors to the venue, there were hundreds queuing for their lobotomies and we missed out ;)

automatically going to franchsies does not necessarily mean they have no ideas.

some peoplehave the ideas but have no idea on how to build on it

franchises eliminate the speciality or hard required to getting set up, eg leases, fitout, suppliers, marketing etc .etc. etc.

plus on top of that the perception that you are going to make a lot of money

frankly if there was an area with very little comptetion and demand for a product (lets say mcdonalds) and an opportunity came around, id take it

No doubt there are people who have done very well out of franchises but personally I have not known any. On the other hand I know a lot of people who have made quite a good living for them self by starting their own business from scratch for little outlay.

Franchise to me just seems like a huge outlay for a system that is often quite restrictive. A lot of business get by on 15-20% profit. If you have someone sitting on top taking the cream business life is going to be difficult. Not only that but often quick decisions need to be made to change direction or offer new products to keep up with the market. If the franchisor isn't great at recognising this you go down the drain with them.
