    {Note from mods - thread about covid-19 split into thread Economic effects of Covid-19}

What an election result in WA!! At the moment the ALP has 52 out of 59 lower house seats (Libs 2; Nat 4; in doubt 1). I am so shocked!! Unprecedented

It's disappointing but not unexpected. The opposition has been terrible here... misstep after misstep. The campaign was not amazing.

Will be interesting to see the results in respect of the upper house.

Did it have to do with locking up the state for the majority of the year?

    Totally predictable.

This is what happens when Governments put the the health/lives of its constituents FIRST.

It happened in NZ!! It happened in Queensland!!! It happened in ...

Putting the health/lives of constituents first will always be a winning political strategy.

Putting the economy first, especially in a pandemic (as some PC members were advocating) will never be a winner.

One comment was that the entire opposition would fit into a Toyota Corolla. Perhaps not quite, it might take a 4WD.

It doesn't make for a good government to have a weak opposition - and I am a Leftie. A government needs to be held accountable, and a tiny opposition can't do this.

Yep and so the pollies and bureacrats have caused way more economic damage then necessary because it polls better, they don't understand business at all or a combination of both

Losing an election in times like this is not a disgrace. In general, people will vote for the incumbent.

But, losing an election by this margin is a disgrace (and I stoop more to the right).

The Libs needs a total re-think on their values, their strategy, their policies, ... get a whole new team, and they will come back.

A similar thing happened in Queensland a few years ago.

Governments in UK and the US put their businesses first. Last time I looked, their economies weren’t very healthy.

Nor were a lot of their constituents.

Perth economy doing very well, we are in surplus due to iron ore prices soaring.

This has Nothing whatsoever to do with the Premier in WA, who literally threw small business’ under the bus. Lots of vacant offices, we wont know full impact for a while.

Hard Lockdowns very popular in Perth. Last hard lockdown were for 2 cases.... lol.....say no more

Yet the premier's personal popularity was up to 88%. Most Australian leaders have had strong support from the public since the pandemic started, though none as strong as this. One doesn't get this sort of support because iron ore prices are high. People appreciated being protected.

More exciting news is the Chump Mundane went down.

Not one word from Dear Leader Mark about his unneeded extension of Covid rental laws till after the election. Not one word about the huge number of people unable to find or afford a rental. Not one word of how their gruberment will help address the issue. Yet we are still letting in 1000+ overseas people a week. No idea where they will live.

But imagine they struck a balance of economy vs health/lives rather than health/lives at any cost?

NSW wasn't perfect, but did pretty good job of getting on with life rather than locking down for a week for ONE single case.

Looks like the conservatives in WA need to take a good hard look at themselves.
For that young bloke to announce such a brain-dead climate policy in a mining state tells me they got 6 more seats than they deserve. He should go back to his xbox and they need to find a leader with some life experience that might inspire the many entrepreneurial people that exist in that great part of the world. Looks like they were out of the contest for a long long time.

The problem is the power brokers are pre-selecting candidates who do not represent the majority views of the electorate. Essentially they are fringe candidates with fringe views. This year, for the Libs, we had anti-vaxxers, homophobics and racists. Another candidate was dumped after linking the COVID-19 pandemic to 5G technology. Bad news if they want to form government.

The best news of this result is that it shows that no one is in the least bit influenced to vote LNP by the Murdoch Press and Sky News, rather the opposite.

NSW has 54 COVID deaths so far (not counting the ones they exported to other States eg Ruby Princess).

Yes, NSW did well when compared with Victoria (820 deaths).

But not quite so well when compared with Qld (6 deaths) and WA (9 deaths).

Allowing for population differences, NSW should only have 10 deaths to match Qld's performance or 28 to match WA's performance.

As you say, NSW wasn't perfect. In fact, I would say NSW was far from perfect.
