We had a company install a new TV digital antenna which cost us $1,000 for a single story house in South West Sydney area. Have we been charged too much?

Please see attached screenshot which shows all the parts that were installed. I can't really read the handwriting as it's too messy so hopefully others are able to make out what it says.

    • Who knows?
    • Did you call a few quotes?
    • Was it emergency works?
    • Does it work?
    • Is it neat?
    • Did it resolve the problem?
    • Was it an easy installation?
    • Removal of old equipment?

In some areas where the mast will need to be high and also have a booster it may be OK and that may need power supply too - That seems what is scribbled. In other places it would be quite excessive. Did it also involve internal house cabling of a decent distance ? As a guide look at the roof and also your neighbours and check whether the mast is very tall and supported by wires and has a smaller box on the mast or its is shorter (height of a person) and not supported.

Technically no such thing as a digital antenna. The digital signal is tuned and encoded through a set top box as a stand alone or built into the TV etc.

My experience with antenna installers is that they're mostly sharks.

Last one I had installed cost me $700. It took the guy 15 mins and used $150 worth of parts. I understand that there is value in their knowledge but it was still $200 too much.

No, didn't call around. We used TV Antenna Installation Cost in Sydney (2021) | Nu-Life TV Antenna which is meant to be trusted with government contracts, Telstra, Combank, etc. as their clients.

    Not emergency works.

No, they didn't remove the old antenna.

Yes, it works. No idea if it's neat.

Yes, they installed a booster and brackets apparently. He said that the antenna can't be over 2 meters high otherwise their could be problems with the weather.

All up it took probably just under an hour.

internal house cabling - do you mean in the ceiliing? I'm not sure as it was quite noisy when he was up on the roof and it sounded like he was moving tiles so possibly there was cabling put in the ceiling area, I'm not sure.

This does not make sense, a digital antenna decodes an encoded signal. It is what it does If it does this it is a digital antenna. If it doesnt it is an analogue antennal.

A antenna receives a clutter of signals. It passes it filtered (noise?) or unfiltered to a encoder that will tune to specific frequencies ie channels. Excepting some difficulty with digital channels many old anaolog antenna fpick up digital TV fine. Provided the user has a STB. Foxtel has one built in provided the box is plugged to a antenna input. Most TVs too. The STB will need to be tuned to find channels as they can move or new ones added etc.

Did they install an Australian made antenna that will last long to suit Australian conditions or was it a cheap Chinese made antenna?

Was it just the antenna or did you also need extras like brackets, signal boosters, etc.

    I actually don't know.

Brackets and cables, but I don't know anything about signal boosters.

    LOL $1000 bucks?

Man.......sorry to say but someone took you for a ride. I got a fully qualified person from Airtasker to install digital antenna, 3 outlets and a booster in a 2 story house for $270.

Never ever get a RE agent to organize these repairs.
