Rolf... are you kidding with Coochiemudlo? I have a friend who is trying to sell her mother's house there. It is not moving quickly at all, is worth very little. I'm not sure it is a great place to buy an IP (even though it is cheap).

Might be a good time to buy then if it's a buyers market ;)

    the question was "trendy"............

not good rental rtn or good growth prospects.....................to be fair, stuff on the islands has always been worth very little, and thus will usually be worth little in relative terms

I recently read an article talking about Annerley and Moorooka starting to gain a vibe and become more "hip". A little further out from the city, about 7k's but easy access via bus.

I am still a little perplexed. Would you call coochie "trendy"?

Popular with all demographics, and you've probably ranked them correctly as regards the level of not not trendiness.

I'm not really sold on Annerley.. Ipswich rd has 6 lanes of heavy traffic including semi-trailers.. I've noticed a few cafes open up down the side streets, but for me doesn't have charm of an equivalent suburb on the Northside e.g. Ashgrove/Bardon

This situation exists on the northside around Gympie Road as well. It doesn't mean the entire suburb is like this though, and that's the case in Annerley once you get a little way back from Ipswich Road. I do like Fairfield better, but it does flood a bit down there.

6 lanes is bad, but 2 lanes can be equally painful, especially if you drive to work. Jubilee Tce can be a nightmare.

Do you mean Fortitude Valley in Brisbane ? --> this was suggested by the R/E agent who sells OTP apartments.

I also thinking of buying townhouse or a house for renovation in Brisbane as well but I'm not local so I do not know the area.

Yeah, the Valley is Fortitude Valley. Not sure if you're aware but units aren't doing so well in some areas in Brisbane.
I would stay away from off the plan apartments as well.
For the price a house is the way to go I reckon. But make sure to do plenty of research.
Finding suburbs that are below their previous peak would be a good start, though plenty of suburbs have already increased in value recently. Especially the 'trendy' ones ;)

If you have a subscription for them, good. But you can find general info on plenty of free sites like realestate.com.au (eg. http://www.realestate.com.au/neighbourhoods/fortitude valley-4006-qld - click on 'trend', then select 'annual') or various real estate magazines.
