    Hey PC Peep's,

    Just a quick one that maybe someone can help me with.

    Town planning shorts courses? I've been trying to find a group NSW based thats running overview courses or some sort of structured education to town planning.

    However I can only find 4 year full time courses etc etc.

    There is a private group QLD based running what sounds to be perfect short courses and refreshers, however they only take large groups so my calls for help are being ignored.

    Does anyone know a group?

    Thanks as always guys and girls.

    API have a seminar 3/11/16 Back to basics - titles, surveying and areas on plans (v161103) - sold out..

    You can also look at the grad Certificate in property and planning at uts - 1 year

    Sounds like there's a gap in the market for someone to start a business teaching courses!

    Why do you need to study a course to learn this? I can teach you in 5 minutes.

    1 - Do not assess anything quickly!!! Make sure any applications sit on your desk for an extended period, I recommended waiting for the client to make their 10th call regarding a follow-up.

    2 - When assessing an application make sure all logic is thrown out the window. Be sure to raise concerns with regards to offstreet parking and privacy overlooking.

    3 - Be sure to request a useless landscaping plan. Ensure client researches what constitutes drain tolerant bushes and have them include in landscaping.

    4 - Refee to step 1 after you request some additional information. Under no circumstances do you action anything on submission.

    5 - Be sure to NEVER communicate with another town planner. It is critical that you have your own view. You need to ensure anything one planner says that you say the opposite. There is to be no cohesion amongst staff and policies.

    6 - When in doubt make sure you lay blame to another department. I like to use engineers in drainage as a reason why the client can't have say a window, even though this has nothing to do with them.

    7 - Be sure to request multiple permits. This is how we leverage the clients money and allows us to put the client back to step 1.

    8 - Be sure to allow towering developments as these allow us to collect rates. Be sure to cause constant heachaches for a 2 lot subdivision.

    Awesome.

    8 is particularly relevant at the moment, your 1 into 2 lot is 3m2 short of the box tick - NO WAY, you want a 40 level tower in a 15 max zone - Have you considered 50 levels as we think that may be more appropriate for this site?

    If the course is anything like the degree then from what I see in graduates:

    You will learn
    1. How to design a city from scratch;
    2. Large motherhood statements about communities;
    3. Lots of touchy feel stuff.

    You will not learn
    1. How to read a planning instrument;
    2. How to write a planning report;
    3. How to make a development application;
    4.Pretty much anything a planner does in their job.

    What do you want to know exactly?

    PC is a good place to ask :)

    You can learn a lot just by reading the council DCP and LEP. That should cover off a fair amount of what is relevant to general investing. Anything of a larger scale probably warrants using a town planner anyway.

    I am a member of PIA, the Planning Institute of Australia and they have workshops on different subjects every month or so that is open to non-members. Most are held in Sydney but some regional events also.

    The one next week is titled "what they did not teach you at university" RPI above is spot on with his opinion :)

    Generally though I think you can learn more here on the forum.
