Back in the day in the 90s I recall many of these shacks filled with groups of surfers, music, pot, beers, parties, waking up in the morning and hitting the surf, coming home from the clubs at 4am having a skinny dip in the ocean.

Very very few "surf shacks" of this type left in Mermaid. Now almost all replaced by mansions and latte sipping quinoa salad eating hipsters, wags, and millionaire entrepreneurs.

What's the equivalent going to cost beachfront Sydney? 2.5 x?

Hard to compare as I'm not sure sudney has much that is truely "beach front". Maybe Palm Beach? Or is there anything else?

Wow $5m is pricey even by Sydney beach standards. I think Sydney's northern beaches represent better value here- lots of examples but check out this Narrabeen sale from less than 12 mths ago. True waterfront and finished house with the works. I know which one I'd consider better value for your $5m budget..... 107 Ocean Street, Narrabeen, NSW 2101 - Property Details

Back in the mid 80's I was joining in with some of that, wild times, no RBT back then either, $1 spirits at Bensons, then the grim reaper bowling add's started showing on telly, slowed a few of us down...

Those were the days. Back then you could still drive home from wasted, from the clubs in Surfers slowly along Hedges Ave towards Mermaid. Not that I did that, of course ...

Could never understand this Australia's fixation about beach front..sure they are nice but paying so much extra ??? and with erosion to boot?

Go to Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand Sri Lanka.....i myself have gazed at them and... same views ..even better.. some of them...at a fraction of price (can cover cool holiday and airfares too!)...

Or is it about something else??
