Interesting investigative article on the value of the Catholic Church's wealth in Australia.

Catholic Inc. What the Church is really worth
"The Catholic Church in Victoria is worth more than $9 billion, making it the biggest non-government property owner in the state and much wealthier than it has admitted in evidence to major inquiries into child sexual abuse."

    Unfortunately probably almost nil.

Keep in mind the church also has other non-property assets - "And it has other investments, including in superannuation and telecommunications. A church-owned fund manager has more than $1.4 billion under management."

This is just one church of one religion. Added all up....

    Churches have a tax exemption.
Am dreaming of the day when the royal commission advises that compensation to survivors should be paid from selling off the assets of the perpetrators.
Each organisation involved in these terrible deeds will be ordered to contribute 30% of their net worth today as a compensation to the survivors or their children.
If there's anything left over it should be used to support abuse support agencies.
    Just dreamin' of the day.....

The trouble is that there are multiple entities involved. They will just try to make token payments - and it is not just the catholics or the chistians abusing kids, there was also a news article today about a form teacher at an orthodox jewish school to did something to kids and then fled to Israel.

I would like to see the day when they are taxed as per normal. It just doesn't make sense that there a tax concessions for the largest land owners in the country.

That was my point, like many other NFP’s, many that shouldn’t be, some very dodgy.

Years ago I dated a stock broker who worked for perpetual, some of the huge funds she told me that various NFP’s have invested with them was ridiculous, billions+, yet cry poor when there’s a crisis etc.

I doubt this is only the case in Victoria. I suspect it is the case in most of Australia, if not around the world.

I believe the no tax laws were created because the religious organisations provided social services that the government would otherwise have to provide (and fund through taxes).

Soup kitchens, emergency accommodation, rehab, counseling etc.....

It wasn't that long ago that religious organisations were your only option should you end up in trouble.

Even now, it's hard to estimate how much faith has to do with the number of volunteers in the community.

That will be the argument put forward by the non profits.

I think it's in the Koran, Torah or Bible or something. You have to give god 10% or be struck down by lightening.

Wait a sec. So how much wealth is in the V City? And why hasn't it been sold off to some private museum, so the proceeds can be used to help the poor? It just doesn't make sense. You got to lead by example.

I spent 3 months in a Catholic School before being kicked out and remember the story where JC says if someone takes your jacket, give them your shirt as well. So by right I can go to the V City, grab some artwork and some one will throw me a jacket. Or maybe I won't make it out alive lol.

No caps allowed. Security cameras wont be able to see your face clearly and identify those not donating.

I'm a little mystified by the claims that millions are lost through church tax exemptions. For my own church which owns no property (we rent cinemas), our accounts for this year look something like: Giving $2.5m, Staffing $1.6m, Premises rent $0.4m, operations $0.4m, Misc $0.1m, surplus ('profit') next to nothing. What are you going to tax?
