FB has been in trouble to public trust ATM, read an article from here,

Inside Facebook's Two Years of Hell

it seems the current problem has been there for a while.

do you reckon there will be another social media app/platform coming out to fill the vacuum soon?

I don't see a vacuum - and see most people still using FB as normal ... although the younger generation have moved to Instagram and Chat.

Monitoring is a fact of life - every time you use your mobile, internet, eftpos, credit card, flybuys, passport, pay a bill, register your dog - data is being collected. One simply has to be boringly predictable and learn to tune out advertising (sorry Simon, I honestly don't "see" click bait ads)

Did you realise that livetraffic monitors for accidents or traffic jams by the amount of mobiles congested in an area? It's a way of life

I first heard about that in 2005 when Nokia was a thing & Kimmy Kardashian wasn't.

    agree and diagree,

"mobile, internet, eftpos, credit card, flybuys, passport, pay a bill, register your dog - data is being collected", re these, ppl are aware their data will be registered.

FB is a great platform for sharing info with ppl, but...

The way facebook lets some people carry on is poor. There was a cycling article posted the other day and one person literally wrote:

"Easy way to deal with 2 abreast is to take out the outside rider. Some tire marks down their lykra's will get their attention."

I reported the post and facebook claimed:

"We reviewed the comment you reported and found it doesn't violate our Community Standards."

Says a lot really. This is another reason why people are leaving.

Well - one would have to be pretty naive to think it wasn't being collected ... only got to look at how the cookies ads follow you from FB to PC to "what's the weather doing"

As it was mentioned on Q and A last night, A company worth billions of dollars but not charging their users any subscription fees? How else would that happen unless they were selling your data...

For years I have WhatsApp and WeChat, on top of FB. These two are the most popular amongst my family and friends and I fail to see why they like it so much. It's good for quickie thing like setting-up a Reunion Dinner, or a 20-day tour around China. But the constant thing I heard is "Oh I have deleted my W&W, can you resend". Also later-comers do not get to see the history, so it gets repeated.....so annoying...

To me FB has more permanency, and is structured well. I use it for our Neighbourhood, Community Group, a certain group of friends. New Members can browse and read the history.
Why is privacy such a big issue? In the first instance, people should not post sensitive stuff on any social platform. No personal info, house address, phone number, people you slept with after last night party etc etc.... People should think twice before they post and make sure everything can stand any fire. Or, delete it later. (I know, the traces is there but not for the public...)

I will be happy to switch if they can satisfy my criteria above. Until then, FB it is!

I think we are saying the same thing ( but from a different angle :)).

I can safely bet that, most ppl are not naive enough to believe their data ( personal, shopping habits, travel, preferences, ....) are not tracked or analysed for commercial use.

    digital footprints, scary.

FB, unfortunately, becomes the target in the current environment.

Agreed - helps that my mum is a FB friends so it always has to pass the "mum" test before I post.

Also, I can't understand people that post that they're heading out for dinner or going on holidays. Although I do have privacy settings, if someone hacks into the system they'd be able to see when the house is empty ... I always post about events or holidays afterwards.

Can’t help but to think that people will grow to regret a lot of the info sharing which is underway today.
Facebook, google home, Apple whatever, amazon thingy. Those things which are in your home listenening and recording.

But who knows. Maybe I’m missing out on excellent technology which will change my life immeasurably and make me happy. I’m happy to let that opportunity be missed

Just don’t post compromising or embarrassing photographs that you will regret later.

Zuckerberg is a dodgy creep and I look forward to the day they become another Digg or MySpace.

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
    Zuck: Just ask
Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?
    Zuck: People just submitted it.
    Zuck: I don't know why.
    Zuck: They "trust me"
    Zuck: Dumb ****s
