OK.. so my gambling streak came out a little more than usual and I bet a little more than I ordinarily do on the Melb Cup (btw its the only time I gamble in the year). All up, $200 bet. I should add that I have for the most part picked very high odd horses as well as some trifectas which is half as difficult as winning the lotto approx., so my overall chances of winning anything is very, very slim.

These are for first place winners $10 on each horse:

These are also first place winners, $20 on each horse:

OK, these are all trifecta for the exact order of winning places 1,2 and 3. If I win any of these, its drinks on me for everyone!

Seeing as you've gone quiet, I assume you've won. I'll have a cocktail thanks. Make it a Martini - shaken, not shtirred! :D

I managed to pick the winner. Was my only straight out bet for the race.
    $10 each way > returned ~$216.
Read somewhere about it racing well against strong stayers o/seas and that 51.5kg was extremely low weight for it.

Also put down ~$80 on mystery quinella/trifeca/first4. Be nice to pickup first4 ~$50k

My nephew opened a TAB account and received a free bet of $110 after depositing just $20.
Backed the winner and picked up $1300.
    Using OPM !

The last time I placed a bet in the Melbourne Cup I won, it was the same month that my better half got her first, (current and only) horse Archie. Archie is a massive ex racehorse thoroughbred, who apparently did quite well in his day.

I knew nothing about the industry, and other than having a fun bet here and there I wasn't all that interested. I did go to a few meets when I was younger, it is exciting and they are magnificent creatures.

After taking Archie on though, getting to know him and really connecting with what intelligent, emotional amazing creatures they are I started reading up a little on it all. I didn't get very far, just far enough to realise that it's an industry that will never get another cent from me. The winnings from that year went straight to a charity that looks after ex racehorses that are no longer viable so essentially thrown away....

As I've got older I've started to question a lot more of the things that we do in daily life that are "the norm" and we take on face value and really look behind the scenes and ask myself why we do it, (eg having a fun bet on the nags here and there without looking at what is going on behind the scenes to provide me with that "entertainment"), and what impact my actions have on others, be it people, animals and the planet. It has lead to some very stark realities of life and has been a bit of an awakening of sorts and in an analogy to the property market, you don't know what you don't know (and more frighteningly a lot of the things you think you know are conditioned and not truths) - the more I question what I thought was normal the more I am realizing we're living in The Matrix in a lot of ways. Apologies for the existential ramble, didn't intend it to go there....

If anyone is interested in further reading or info, this Horse Calendar year (August 1st 2016 to July 31st 2017) has been the worst year for horse racing fatalities in Australia to date. 137 horses have died in this one year alone, in Australia and On Track only (i.e. not including horses in the industry dying off race). This is ONLY Australia and only in one year, on track. That's a dead horse every 2.6 days.

Source - Deathwatch - Horse Racing Kills

Not posting to cause offence or incite a thread riot, just figured some people may like to know a little more about what their fun bet/office sweep encourages.
