Just finished watching this is full now. Confirmed some things for me but also learnt a lot. Will now do some reading on glucose as I've been cutting out all sugars (or as much as possible) and not just fructose and sucrose.

    Thanks for the link.

The YouTube video Grey ghost linked - very heavy watching whereas The Sugar Film is a lot more lighter watching but interesting nonetheless.

Everything in moderation. So much easier said than done I know, but some of these low carb high fat/protein diets are so unhealthy in the long term and are still just as unsustainable as other fad diets.

I agree with you so much about this.

I'm mostly low carb/high fat/protein, but there are dangers to eating too much protein and too few carbs. I was considering doing a keto-type diet at one point, but then I read about the dangers of post-keto; the fact is few of us would want to or be able to cut out carbs forever (eg social gatherings). I so, so agree with you regarding moderation. An unsustainable diet that will lead to unhealthy reactions once you quit, is just not worth it for most average people.

I went through a no-sugar (including no sugary fruit like mangoes) phase once. But sugar is my one vice, and though I cut it out of "casual" foods (ie no cereal, only drink water, etc) I have about 200cal worth of chocolates/ice-cream almost everyday (plus a bit of high-sugar fruit like peaches, in season), but I try to exercise a bit too.

Yes, mine is a horrible, horrible diet compared to what most hard-core fitness people eat, but I'd rather have a bit of sugar and be extremely happy, than cut out sugar all together and be miserable.

Weetbix & rolled oats are extremely low in sugar (about the only cereal which are).

they are also a refined product with little nutritional value.
whole foods are best - the less tampered with they are the better.

    Aren't rolled oats relatively unprocessed?

No, thanks for pointing it out! I do have oats occasionally, so this spurred me to go check what's going on with them - Rolled oats - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not good carb-wise (duh) but only 1g sugar.

Of course this can be negated by folks (hipster cafes, I'm looking your way) who choose to add in more sugar while cooking ...

I hate seeing fat people walking around with unhealthy food!! Yesterday I saw two people (one very fat) walking out of the carpark at work holding bags of McDonalds. We work in Parramatta. Why did they even need to take the car in the first place??

    Anyway...

Oats are a terrific carb though. The key to any good diet is that you're eating the right type of anything. There is bad fat, bad protein and bad carbs and then there are good examples of all of them. For instance things like apples are a pretty good source of "sugars", brown rice, oats or quinoa are great sources of carbs and things like salmon and turkey are great for protein.

Gosh. I try very hard not to judge other people. But seriously. Maccas is the worst. The burgers are better at Hungry Jacks.

(The last time I ate at HJ's was two years ago, though, on a "diet cheat day" and I promptly felt sick. These days I just think, "that's almost my entire day's worth of calories,", remember how bad I felt last time, and I just can't do it.)

I'm lucky that I never got into the processed foods habit - not much, anyway. Whole foods also make you feel more full.
