Thanjs @Kat. Nice info and you've made my day.

The response from Hostplus was slightly humorous to me. Is Hostplus up to the respective LIC's standards sprung to my mind. These LIC's have been functioning for how many years compared with Hostplus?!

Nsh, really how difficult would it be to let their members know of alterations to their list of investment products available.

I do feel communications could be still be improved. Probably getting there but some way still to go I think.

Word seems to spread fast. Is there no respect for the privacy of a person of my age!! Oh, the horror.

At least I haven't waded into the CGT discussion. How quickly we forget the time when anything over $50k pa was taxed at 48.5% and the passing if the A NewTax System Act 1999. He he

You are not a passive investor. Like me, teetering on the edge of SMSF. Let's do it already?

Yes it made me simultaneously roll my eyes and laugh.

Be keen to hear from anyone who has been able to invest in LICs and ETFs of their choice, without having to set up a SMSF.

Host Plus have a pretty good recent growth record on the simple no frills balance index fund. Diversified and very low on fees. Why try and out do their well oiled system by adding ETFs in the mix in t his case?

Maybe if performance really drops it might make sense to be a bit more hands on or move to a different fund.

Like Oracle I too am with esuperfund.

Fee is fixed regardless of size/holdings/transactions/complete flexibility in what shares/etfs/lics.

I too found it incredibly simple and less than a half an hr a year confirming transactions.

Heaps of educational material on website.

Am very glad I set up smsf with them, very cheap. The expiry date of the special they advertise rolls over every 14 days.

Scott Pape recommends HostPlus (Index balanced) for Super and apparently has his funds within

Having a quick google, I found this representation

Why is he recommending 3 options within funds which have returned 2-3% in the last year? (Previous years have been better/has management changed/taken their eye off the ball?).

Does the pie chart reflect the proportion of funds invested in each asset class for the 'balanced/defaul' option or for the options in the table?

Personally...it would pay a little extra and go with well known Index Funds like Vanguard and ishares (Blackrock) ...they have really good track record.

What would be a nice balance between Australian and International? I've noticed the International options that my super fund uses have performed better then the local.

Vanguard funds have lower fees. S&P 500 fund is US domiciled. There are still question marks over estate taxes if investing in personal name or Super.

    Cheers,
    Oracle.

Did more research on Hostplus and Australian Super to emulate a SMSF without the admin for Obi-Lazy-One (moi !). Here is what I found:

    Australia Super Direct Investment Option
    PROS
    - Largest industry fund with low costs
    - Offers an Index Option
    - Low fees overall
    - Has both Vanguard VAS (Australian Shares) and VGS (International) EFTs both of which I like
    - $78 dollar admin fee is same as Hostplus

    CONS
    - Administration fee is $399 as opposed to $180
    - No option to purchase LICs
-When in pension mode cannot move to pension fund without selling investments in the direct option Share/ETFs this means CGT is paid
-Purchase costs of EFT/shares slightly more than Hostplus

    Hostplus Investment Choice Option

    PROS
    - Offers an Index Option
    - Low fees overall
    - Some choice of EFT as well as LICs Vanguard VAS (Australian Shares)
    - Pension fund move without selling investments thus avoiding CGT
    - $78 dollar admin fee is same as Australian Super
-Investment Choice Option fee is lower at $180
-Purchase costs of EFTs/Share are slightly lower

    CONS
-No Vanguard VGS (International Shares) option which I like
    -Some limitations on top funds
