Will be flying to Atlanta next week on business for 1 month.

I would like to mix it with a nice holiday in US. Any suggestions, I am very confused, thinking San Francisco, New York..

Would like a relaxing holiday, with some sighting seeing, got to also consider the weather at this time of the year.

Clearly Florida is out and probably not my ideal destination anyway.

Anyone been to Las Vegas, thinking it may be a blast.

    MTR:)

It sounds as if you prefer cities to nature?

Why not Florida? You'll be blown away ;-)

Even Atlanta is possibly due some storm activity.

Personally I prefer San Francisco to NY, but then I fell in love there and got married there so I'm biased. I like the character of the place vs the frenetic activity of NY, which is more my sort of thing. But there's a lot of fires around San Francisco ATM, it might not be a good time to go. Last week they were saying that the giant sequoias north of the city were being threatened.

Vegas is a place to visit just once. Completely artificial, completely over the top, but that seems to suit a lot of people as well.

Speaking of over the top. It's an amazing place. I'm not sure of the fire situation there, as there were also fires around LA. Some of the best coastline along the Grand Sur has been cut off by landslides, allowing a more limited access.

I went to Vegas for a week as part of our honeymoon. We did not know what to expect as it is not really our scene, but, we had an amazing time. Can highly recommend it. FWIW we watched a heap of shows, went to the Grand Canyon and did not gamble a $.

The chopper ride is awesome. But Grand Canyon is worth more than just that. If you are into nature it's really worth spending at least a couple of days.

@MTR , what a nice little dilemma you have. I'm jealous!

How much time do you have? Wd it be a stretch of say 2 weeks, or is it a few hours a day plus weekends? We had 5 weeks so we did a 7-day guided tour, then DIY and self-drive. I didn't expect I'd like it so much.

SF and NY are very far apart, west and east. I would base this on my flying-out city. Lots of ideas above, and my fav are Grand Canyon (8-seater plane), NY, Boston, Washington, Niagara Falls, Dallas, plus little towns like Nashville and Graceland. Like you, we have Gold Coast so not too fuss about Florida. Haven't been to SF and Atlanta so can't comment.

Give me New Orleans over Vegas anyday of the week. Though I haven't seen it post Katrina. Apart from the HBO series Treme, which is very good.

Just realised I didn't answer yr question on Vegas.
Apart from being our entry point to Grand Canyon, we were pleasantly surprised as to how family-friendly and safe it feels. After 9pm, streets are still full of ordinary mums and dads, and their littles. I've never felt that safe here in Downtown Valley in BrisVegas LOL. Lots of shows to watch some cheap some not, but for me just took a bus up and down the Bouvlevard was fun, plus the outlet shopping.

My son and I are going back to New York on the 20th. We went for 2 weeks last year and ran out of time to fit in all the things we wanted to do, so have to go back this year.
I have only been home from Florida for 3 weeks. I go to a holiday destination which I love, I have been there 3 times in the last 8 months, I hope it escapes the damage.

Definitely Vegas with a trip to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. Been about 3 times and would go again.
