Had a gander at the weather app. What looks like rain isn't. It's smoke and heading back over Canberra I believe.

I'm 35km away from the fires. I thought a wasp was coming at me, but it was a piece of ash.

    That would be disconcerting.

Now the beast has spotted in the Tinderry area and has been raised to Emergency level by the NSW RFS. Heavy smoke is inhibiting air support.

80,000 hectares. 33% of the ACT.

Not too long after the ACT were patting themselves on the back for no major fires in the ACT.

We need that promised rain ASAP.

Certainly do @geoffw. One concerning aspect is the Orroral fire is slowly heading north west. Now closing on Corrin Dam. If it gets further and a strong westerly comes...

We'd better hope the 737 which was on standby at East Sale just in case the suburbs got hit last week is still around.

And once this is over - assumption there - the rebuilding will not only be in material or financial terms. I think many will require some form of counselling in the next few years along with potential physical health issues.

At least Tharwa looks safe, also the southern suburbs.

I assume that water quality will be impacted adversely. The forecast rains will be welcome, but I don't know what's going to happen to the water supply.

Apparently fire ******ant was accidentally released over Parkes Way today.

I don't know a lot about the water quality impact but I assume if any rain is too heavy there is little to nothing left to absorb any run off. It could carry ash, get into waterways and possibly compromise any fish population as well as drinking water.

That or they saw a car on fire and thought "Why not?"

In the ultimate irony, the NSW RFS State Operations Centre has today be reconfigured to deal with floods for the NSW SES!!

They still have more than 40 fires burning across NSW and so will literally be dealing with fires and with floods from the same operations centre at the same time.

Now all we need is a locust plague or something

There are water spouts predicted with the low pressure system forming - could we see a Sharknado too?

Better put James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" on rotation.

Recent news is the Orroral fire in the ACT is now being controlled. 86,600 hectares in size with a perimeter of 134 km of which 60 km has been extinguished with 74 km still active.

With the rain forecast, there was a sign up on one of the main roads into the centre.
"We hope it rains so we don't have to work".

The alert status has been changed from out of controlled to ring controlled.

We're not seeing much of that rain from up north down here. 2.2mm in the last 36 hours.
