A question: How long would you expect the service of a split system airconditioner would take in an average home?

Unless there was something strange or wrong ... And I see you are in Sydney. You just have to clean the filters yourself every 6 months or so. Takes a couple of minutes.

    Thank you Bunkai
We found it hard to believe that two guys took 10 minutes and charged $200 for the service. I guess we will do it ourselves in the future!

They wash the condenser which if poorly maintained can be quite blocked.

I was only thinking of the internal unit - yes you need to make sure the outdoor unit is relatively clear but not exactly rocket science !

I don't know what washing means though

It should state in the service invoice what was done.

    Typically:
    Check intake filter
    Check external unit
    Run system self-diagnostic (if available)
Check coolant pressure / top up if required

Check belts, grease, adjust the nut on top etc.

Ours have been around $150each in Brisbane, $200 in Sydney seems normal?

10mins work, but what about driving to your place and back to the next job? that's most of the cost.

    Average rates are

    Callout Fee $90
    Labour $100 per hour.
Also depents on if it is a Room Air Split or Split Ducted.
$200 is not excessive, just comes down to exactly what they done.
Coil clean of outdoor is relatively simple, just hose it down unless it was all gummed up with something and then coil cleaner would be required. Heat exchangers are expoxy coated so they can be cleaned easily unless in a salt environment which strips the expoxy coating over time and corrodes the fins.
Coil clean on indoor is alot more involved.
Room Air Splits in high humidity climates can develop mold on the fan barrels and swing lourves from sweating if the unit reached dew point frequently.
Need a better description of what was carried out and the type of system.
Either way you wouldn't get any change from $150 on a service so I wouldn't lose sleep over an extra $50
