if one of the signs of becoming Detroit is young people about to or just started working wanting move interstate, then I think this is accurate.

My observation is not from statistical data, it's from relative's children in uni, sister in law who just started working etc... most of their peers and colleagues either have or are planning to move interstate.

I myself have lived there for 3 years and moved to Melbourne. I don't see a reason to go back even for holiday as they have not much to offer for mid 20's to mid 30's general age group.

Net negative interstate migration has been fairly consistent for South Australia, usually hovering at ~3,000 net interstate moves a year. As a percentage of population this average has been declining ever since the State bank collapse.

In terms of negative interstate immigration being a significant metric - I'm not so sure. NSW at the same time loses on average ~20,500 people to net interstate migration per annum - representing circa 20% higher per capita than SA, but I don't think we'd say NSW is anywhere near a poor economy.

In terms of the biggest NIM winners, QLD and Vic remain the leaders of consistent growth in this department.

" South Australia suffered an annual net outflow of -4,100 - a level last briefly touched upon through during the financial crisis - reflecting underemployment and persistently weak conditions in the local economy and private sector labour force".

A lot of young people do move away for career opportunities. I was one of them, but I ended up moving back to Adelaide due to cost of living pressures in Sydney. As long as SA keeps adding population (and creating enough jobs to service the population) I'm quite confident about its prospects.

NSW - or Sydney in particular - has a lot of new Australians wanting to settle there. Plenty of jobs at the moment.
    SA - not so much.

sensationalist article. Been to both SA and Detroit. No way SA is like detroit. Even before those closure of car factories days in detroit it was a seedy area to be in with unemployment and crime issues. Many ppl were just peddling streets for crime and drugs. nowadays after reading some AFR about 60 bidders really start to double think on some articles. Go watch the movie 8mile and tell me if SA is like that.
