My wife has a 2004 Holden Astra Classic. We had kept it for our daughter, but she still doesn't have a licence. We've let the rego lapse.

Is it worth getting rego before selling?

It seems $3,500 is a median price for the car/model- but that doesn't account for the high km (200,000).

I'm not sure if we would recoup what we will spend in getting the car registered.

Not sure the rules there, but here the buyer would have to jump through some hoops to get it registered. Contrasted with you doing a renewal then selling it. The latter would have dome inherent value IMO.

Always hard to sell a car without rego. In NSW you can get short term registration - 6 months.

    Thanks DT.

In NSW, we have to get a blue slip which is different from the normal pink slip procedure, apparently this covers identity checks as well as roadworthy. And we pay $44 for new number plates.

It would pay to have the rego on the car,the new price in 2004 was $24,990--private sale guide with rego between now $2,400-$3,800,trade in price $600-$2,000 and those are cars within the 200,000-300,000 km range so with rego you may well be in the price range..

Those cars have a great reputation in terms of reliability as well.

A mate of mine had one forever and tried very, very hard to kill it. He failed.

Someone will def buy it Geoff. Good luck!

Thanks everybody. It's in for a rego check.

What do people find is the best way to sell a car? Gumtree? Carsales? Other?

    I would use carsales.
I don't bother with scumtree/scamtree for items more than $150.

Thanks. So we will go carsales.

But there will be a slight delay.

A car ran into the side of her car when she was coming out from getting her car registered.

Minor damage but it will add to the time that we can sell.

As a buyer i like a car to have rego. Makes it easier to test drive and take home...

A couple of months is enough.

I've sold 2 cars in the last year and the dearer one sold via the 'for sale' sticker on the back. Got a couple of enquiries through car sales and gumtree but what generated the highest level of calls/messages was the sticker.

Having coming from this industry in a past life time
    Just my 2c
Sorry OP (but your going to hate what i have to say)
As it needs a blueslip your going to have to send it off to the mechanic for a full thorough inspection (most will ask you to keep it there for the day - though the inspection takes 30-60 mins), being a blue slip most of the times theres always something minor wrong which needs to repaired (pinkslips on the other hand are basic tyres/lights/brakes etc)
Once you get the bluslip $60+repairs you need to get rego which is $1200ish (CTP + rego fees) + new license plates from $40(your old ones would be void if requiring blue slip).

Holden Astra unfortunately never had great resale values - they had reputation for being not the most reliable and bigger reputation for a car that was not the easiest to work on when things went wrong. In saying that did own one previous that was quiet reliable (other than a misfire which was easy to fix) that i sold to a friend 5 years ago and still hasnt caused any issues other than a clutch and asthetics)

If its a ts model (older 2004 shape ) i would say chuck it on gumtree for 1k as it is, prob get the typical "whats your best price' or '$500 cash now'. Ignore or deny politely but wouldnt be suprised if you end up accepting.after a while.

If its the newer shape try ebay (yeah you might have a couple of no shows etc) but have got good prices for unregoed cars on there. Having higher ks and median price being 3.5 spending 1300 + and your time, better of selling for 2k etc. Worst thing that could happen is spending the money and having the rego waste. Other option is take to a mech and see if he can issue a blueslip when the seller buys (inspect now and get an ok) and that way you can sell it with a blueslip on deposit etc.

    Good luck either way

Id avoid carsales unless its free to advertise for a cheap car - i think its $100 now

Ohh an the one i owned was a 2001 model with 100ks which i sold for $2,000 with 9 months rego in 2011
