    Hi all

I am planning to buy my PPOR and as I have a child that will be in school soon, I was thinking of searching for a property considering a good school zone as my main criteria for finding where to buy as I think that paying for a private school can be expensive and my money goes to the pocket of the owners different to buying my PPOR in a good school zone.

    And I have 3 questions:
    1. Is this search criterion of buying in a good school zone, as main driver, common for homebuyers? or my main criteria should be different?
    2. Should I search for good school zones for primary and/or secondary schools? (I've heard that good secondary schools are harder to find compared to primary)
    3. I can currently search for school rankings on bettereducation.com.au and search for properties in the school zone in Domain. Is there any way of doing this in just one step? kind of a website that shows the properties including their school zone ranking at the same time.
    Thanks,

    Gus

Where I bought in Frankston I found two excellent schools it's zoned in. Kananook and JPC (Primary and secondary) Now this wasn't thought about in 2011 cause I was single. Now 11 years on with a family it's already paved the way for my kids if we plan to move into the house.

The thing about all this is that. What are your kids good at? Where they excel at things use to your advantage and find the school that specialises in that. That'll play a more beneficial part going forward.

Now my wife is a teacher and she has always believe public is better than private now I'm not going to weigh in on that debate. So have a look at that too.

I think as parents yes we want the best for our kids of course. So book in appointment with schools is your best bet.

Are the two schools you mentioned good? Kananook PS score on better education is less than 90 while JPC VCE results are not great (less than 30 average score). I am asking because I am also searching in Frankston for a future PPOR but only found Derinya PS and Frankston High are good in the broader Frankston area (again, based on bettereducation score and VCE results). However, properties with the zones of those two schools are quite expensive.

It's a huge driver, with people willing to pay 10~20% more for the same property in a shool zone vs one that is not.

Thanks. I agree that Naplan is a joke. But how do you assess a school's quality of education just by visiting it without understanding of their ciriculum and end result? Is it by talking to teachers/students/parents to get their feedback.

To be frank, I dont worry much about primary school. Secondary is a much higher priority. For SCs, what metric do you use to choose? Facilities? VCE results?

speak to the teachers and principlas each school has different things that'll make your child excel, ask the school what kind of programs they have to make your child succed,

remember school is a 3 way street, parent, child and teacher working together for the same outcome! if this isnt achieved whats the point! the parents put so much pressure on teachers no wonder teachers are leaving in droves and i don't blame them! my wife broke down twice this term cause of ******* crazy parents who feel they are entitled!

parents need to step back and sort out their **** sometimes cause i can guarantee you there half the reason teachers leave! and they don't even realize it!

Picking a school is tricky. The better Ed scores aren't much use. Especially for primary schools.

As for secondary schools in franga. Monterey probably has the worst rep. But it's on a good trajectory at the moment. So if you are only wanting a primary school then Monterey might suit you well in a decade.

If it achieves its aim a f becomes desirable then it should result in property growth

I was recently in the same boat as you. Buying in a good school catchment can command at least a 10% premium.

Families are willing to pay extra for that.

Good school zone that I know:
    Balwyn high- Balwyn north/Balwyn
McKinnon secondary- Mckinoon, Ormond, Bentleigh and Bentleigh east
They’re both ranking good and popular, so does their properties in the zones.
