IIRC, Bond Uni in Qld started as a private uni back in the 1980's (still is a not for profit/private uni).

Well at least it wasn't named after Rex Jackson, ex-NSW Prisons Minister (who ended up in one).

Uni. Started just as Whitlam government introduced free tertiary ed. My final uni exam was taking place at the same time the Dismissal took place. So I fitted into a time of no fees, no HECS/HELP tertiary education.

I sense pain in your post at your parents attitude, sounds a bit like my father who thought educating girls beyond leaving age was a waste of time as they would marry and have husbands to look after them... :(

Nah - IMHO it's much more competitive to get in these days.

As for uni .... well - I haven't told you what course I got into! Might have been Datto's agronomy course :D:D:D

I have found qualification from this School is most important to me. Hopefully a PhD... :D

I think we are all alumni?

So when we get people posting here looking for PPOR in a good school zone, should this be the one we direct them to?

On a more serious note - there were at least 3 I know of that got into MHS (selective entry for those who are not familiar) from my year level at BHHS (now FSC) - and I'm sure more of them would have got in if they tried, because I wasn't the smartest cookie around. So I think it says something about the school - yet we don't see FSC being held up on the pedestal with the likes of some nearby schools like Glen Waverley, Vermont and East Doncaster from a "performance" aspect (typically based on Year 12 achievements)

Then the really interesting thing was when I got to uni - at one of the allegedly highest performing Unis around - my classmates were from all sorts of high schools. I mean there were the ones you'd expect from the "top tier" as @Tony3008 put it - privates schools like Scotch, Wesley, Haileybury, Xavier, Melb Grammar...), but the most academically highest performer (by far) of my cohort came from a state high school that I have *never* heard anyone wanting to send their kids to. One classmate was even a friend from Mulgrave I went to primary school with, and had gone onto Wellington SC.

And this brings me to the crux of the matter - when someone asks about wanting their PPOR in a "good school zone" - is it more about perception? Are most schools pretty much "good", other than the few that are challenged with some socio-economic issue at a certain time/place? Or have times indeed changed, and "life has become harder" for kids?

At uni (first time round) I did Estate Management/Building Surveying which attracted a higher than normal proportion of students from fee-paying schools (and [1971] a 200:12 male:female intake!). There was also a high dropout rate at the end of year one which I put down to the different teaching environment - those from 'hot-house' schools, perhaps aided by tutors, had been pushed whilst at school and and now, left to their own devices, didn't put the work in, whilst those from less privileged backgrounds were more motivated and self-disciplined. Big generalisation I know.

I think good work ethics and valuing education as a priority. Good public schools are basically good because of the students and often because families' beliefs in what are important in life. :)

Of course that's only an hypothesis...
