Yep. Easy. Of course, because it's easy doing it yourself might not lower the total quote much. Careful on the ladder, too - blokes toppling off poorly secured ladders make up a decent proportion of weekend hospital admissions.

We've just had the gutters replaced for about half a house. Our plumber (who is a good friend) gave us a ballpark figure. He doesn't do many guttering jobs, and now I know why.

It took him hours to remove the guttering from a small flat roofed sunroom. The roof had a waterproofing membrane glued over the top of the roofing material and it continued down over the top of the barge board, into the gutter, and up the outside. (This wasn't visible from the ground when he gave us a ballpark figure.)

We couldn't get the same smaller profile so went for the same size as the rest of the house (looks fine). He had to cut through the membrane without damaging the roof and barge board. Much gnashing of teeth I believe...

We decided to pay an extra $200 for colorbond to save time. Painting a galvanised gutter would have been slightly cheaper but we were pushed for time.

The job took many hours more than he estimated. He worked in the rain because Cyclone Debbie overflow lost us several days and we had everything booked to list the house. He was prepared to stick to his quote, but I insisted we pay him for the time he took.

And a friend of mine had her ex-husband offer to clean out her gutters when she told him she was planning on climbing a ladder to the second level to do it herself.

He fell off the ladder, broke both heels, and was in a wheelchair for several months.

I'd be paying a professional, who carries his own insurance and will know how to do this safely.

Acid is produced from broken down leaf litter etc, obviously eats away at metal guttering, or metal roofing if it's caught up behind a solar panel, brackets etc.

You can purchase PVC guttering, obviously doesn't rust, easy to DIY.
I believe it only comes in pvc white, which wouldn't bother me, otherwise exterior paint.

Materials may cost a little more upfront but savings in the long run including install labor costs with diy.

Removal and disposing of gutter will only save me about $100, so its not worth taking off the quote.

However, excluding the 4 downpipes saved up to $600. Why is there such a big saving on doing your own downpipes? I have installed downpipes and it was extremely easy.

Well i got my final quote from the "biggest / well known" company and their price was actually cheaper than the smaller guys (surprisingly) at $3100 (excluding 4 x downpipes), however i also opted for about 12meters of flashing instead of a double guttering between the house and verandah, which was an additional $600.

I don't know personally if this is wrong or right, but from what I've been told, shown & seen around, there's a difference in thickness & paint quality some manufacturers are using, the cheaper ones (non colorbond) fade quicker, goes a white powdery look.
Have a look around a not so old neighborhood, similar age homes, and you may notice what I mean.

If that bothers you, might be worth looking into.

    Hi All,

Just thought i would share my frustrations with you..

6 weeks ago i accepted (and paid $500 deposit) the gutter job with this large / well known company and I still haven't had them over for a final measure! What I'm really frustrated about is the following:

1: Sales guy told me turn-around time is 2-3 week (its been 6 weeks)
2: After the first week i was made aware that theres a 2 week cooling off period, so they will only look at job after this period
3: After cooling off period, i was told due to Easter holiday and the main guy going on leave, there were delays
4: After 4 week i was told a final measure would take place the following week (which didnt happen)
5: After 5 week i was told a final measure would take place the following week (which didnt happen)

I called this first thing this morning and they were going to give me updates (which they needed to get from their gutter guy and would call me back), 3 hours later, not call back.

Any ideas on how i should handle thee guys?

    Cheers,
    Robbie

Tell them to refund your deposit.. if they don't report them to fair trading.

I would cut them now...get a deposit refund. If this behavior is from the guy that measures and quotes, imagine what the tradies will be like.

Well.. the salesman has already quoted, which i paid the deposit for.

The guy was supposed to be at my property for the past two weeks for a final measure and quote was the installer.

Whats it this forum policy regarding naming the company im dealing with?

These little clips can save money too..Mine have that fitting. Last weekend my wife and I commented on our metal facia's and guttering all being colourbond they look like new after 13 years. Gave them a light clean with the Karcher.

Email snotty email to Roof Seal:

    Dear Roof Seal,

I just thought I would share my current experience in dealing with your company..

On the 6th April 2017 I accepted a quote (work number 25728) to have all my guttering replaced. I had quotes from various other companies but accepted your as I thought your company was a trusted, reliable and reputable company. I was also told the current turnaround time to have the guttering was 2-3 weeks, so my expectation was that the gutters would installed between the 20th to 27th April.

A week after accepting your quote and paying the $500 deposit, I decided to give you a call and see how thing were going. I was made aware that there was a 2 week cooling off period and that you would only look at the job after this period had elapsed., which was around the 21st April. I was never made aware of this cooling off period.

Once this period had elapsed (21st April), I once again made contact with RoofSeal but was told that due to the Easter Holidays and the main gutter guy going on leave, that this had delayed things and that the gutter guy would be at my house in the first week of May for a final measure.

After the first week in May passed and I had had no contact, I made contact at the end of the week and was promised someone would be at my property the next week..

After the second week in May passed and I had had no contact, I made contact at the end of the week and was promised someone would be at my property the next week..

After the third week in May passed and I had had no contact, I made contact at the end of the week and was promised that someone would be at my property on Friday 19th May. I made sure I was home all day. At 4pm that day when no one had come to my property I called again. I was told that someone would definitely be at my property the following day (Saturday). As I wasn’t prepared to wait around all day again, I asked for an idea of what time he would be there, but I was told I would get a call back with confirmation. I didn’t receive a call back.

At this stage, you have left me little option but to make Fair Trading SA aware of the above experience as well as make this experience public, so the public are aware what I have had to go through.

I sincerely hope that someone is at my property today to do a measure, which I can’t expect to take longer than 15mins.

    Thanks,
    Robbie

    Hi All,

The new guttering was finally installed last week but I have 2 concerns with the job which which I thought I would run by you all..

1: I don’t recal there being any rain over the past few days (which I’m aware of) however there is pooling of water around one of the bends, probably about 1cm in depth (see pictures)

2: The lower ends of the roof capping have been “disturbed” and left quite exposed after installing the new gutters (see pictures)

Interested to your hear your thoughts before I finalisae payment (still own about $1000 for the job).

    Cheers,
    Robbie

Looks like the cappings has came off quite a bit. Was the initial quote include rebedding/ repointing disturbed tiles?
