    Hi,

I want to renovate 1 bathroom of an old weatherboard house. I'm looking to take out all old tiles, bathtub, shower cabinet and vanity and replace with new tiles (floor to ceiling), new bath tub, new open shower cabinet, new vanity. No toilet replacement as toilet is outside of the bathroom.
I don't need any high quality tiles or bathtub. Need an economical budget to help me move into the house in a new bathroom. The bathroom area would be 2 metres by 1.5 metre.

I posted the task on airtasker and have received quotes starting from 8K to 18K. Looking for some practical guidance (without having to get into details of calculation by tile area) on what should be a reasonable spend to get this done.

    It's a 1950s weatherboard house.

Airtasker? For the waterproofing too? Risky potentially.

    Is the house on stumps?

Are you going to need water pipes moved?

Have you specified the tiles, brand of bath etc?

Airtasker is an app to post a task and get quote from tradies to complete the task.

I suggest you consider your options in light of your future plans for the house. Bathroom are expensive and you don't want to be redoing it in a few years time. The bathroom is fairly small so may be better to can the bath and have a more generous shower. Would it be beneficial to knock the toilet into the bathroom as they use up bit of space in stand alone mode?

    Plans needed for better comments!

The toilet is in a relatively good condition so I want to leave it as it is to minimise spend. Want to keep a bathtub as that is something I want. Perhaps just a glass particition for the shower instead of cabinet will suffice. I'm looking for a 10 year use. Would you have a guesstimate (with 2k variation) on how much should it cost? I

In Melbourne ? Totally depends on fixtures and fittings but could end up spending $20k if you want one that will last 10 years and floor to ceiling tiles. You are better to speak to a builder about options to minimise costs and then get three like for like quotes.

    Hi Jim,

How much you spend comes down to quality of the fitout, and how much you want to project manage? Do you plan on project managing this?

Here are some rough numbers, based on a cheap fitout for 2m x 1.5m x 2.4m (ceiling)

Lets assume you tile the entire room. I've rounded up some numbers

    Item Cost
    Tiles $250
    Vanity $1000
    Bath $1000
    Open shower $750
    Basin $250
    Basin mixer $250
    Shower Mixer $250
    Towel Rail $100
    Mirror $250
    Lighting $200
    Subtotal $4350

    Trades
    plumbing $800
    Electrical $300
    Waterproofing $400
    Carpentry $400
    Tiler $1500
    Subtotal $3400

    Total $7750

That does not include the cost of managing the project and the trades etc. Those numbers might give you a bit of a starting point

The numbers posted above are in line with my experience on a budget bathroom build, around the 8k mark which was your cheapest quote would be my expectation as long as there are no nasty surprises. Although I would think that in a lot of areas labour cost for the tiler would run higher

Any tradesman worth their salt isn't going to be on airtasker...

You're going to get people who aren't either qualified registered or any good from airtasker, most of the time.

I know what Airtasker is - I have used it several times.

But I wouldn’t use it to get a qualified tradie!

Also add in demolition and waste removal. So another $1000-1500
