    Sorry for the silly question.
We bought our first property a few months back in Brisbane and I'm just overwhelmed with all the paper work but I really cannot find the age of the property.

Can someone help us understand where this obvious date would be?

Did you get a pest and building report? they normally say what age the property is on there. Otherwise RP Data can sometimes show it if you have it

We are going through this at the moment - if the house is quite old then try :

    House History

    Home

RP Data information can be very incorrect - we have had them remove the information from our property as it was wrong and they had no idea of their source.

Council may have records and even building plans in their archives

Read the meter box or talk with the council.

A building inspector will have a decent idea it depends if you are after the exact year or the building is 30 years old but could be 28 to 33.

Ask the neighbours. There is usually at least one who has been there forever and knows just about everything about the properties.

Sometimes the plasterboard will have a date printed on it, the building inspector should see it when they inspect the roof cavity

    Try propertyvalue.com.au
It's not a bad site. Related to RPData, from memory. We use it often. It's not right 100% of the time, but it's pretty good.

I saw the site was pretty good but as I scrolled down to "Year Built" it said "Data not available".

Thank you for pointing out this site. <thumbsup>

So you cannot phone a council or a building inspector?... So... No phones in NSW?

Councils often don't have records - especially going back past 20 years or so. There are some things that help date the house pre 87 vs post 87 for the purposes of depreciation. Sinks, tapware, skirtings, window surrounds can help. Arches, too. Of course, if the place has had a reno, it's harder.

Yes, we have good phone connections and internet in NSW and I am fairly confident to use a phone. My reply, that I'm based in NSW was for the suggestion to check the reading meter to get the date. Maybe I can send a drone and check? ;) What do you reckon?

    To answer your question.
I did speak to Gold Coast Council but they could not find it(not much of help), which means I need to fill a form give them approx. 103 (!!!!) dollars to get this answer.

That second site is great. I just put in my address and found this:
    SHORT-WEIGHT BREAD. - A MARRICKVILLE BAKER FINED. - Evening News (Sydney, NSW : 1869 - 1931) - 12 May 1908
Our place was a bakery and in 1908 the baker was busted for making loaves too light in weight. He was fined 10 pounds - the alternative was two months in jail.

Great story - it is easy to lose a lot of time at the Trove. Wonder what the penalty for lightweight bread would be these days.

To find a lot of the older stuff you need to have the search as Search-Street where search is the street name. There was a good one for your street about a postal clerk who was pealing off the used stamps and selling them - he jumped off the Gap before he could be charges so he widow still got the pension.
