Some of the islands are delightful. Some not so much at the moment.
    Santorini is unbelievable.

i think the greek islands are better than amalfi in terms of views etc and also easier to get to.

We were there last year for a month (including 2 weeks on a bare boat doing the Ionian)

Friends we travelled with have a place there - but have it for lifestyle reasons (they simply want a base for their kids/family to spend time there, Greek heritage etc). They bought in a beautiful town, hundreds of years old and on the Aegean, and 60mins from an international AP all for around 100k AUD

We also looked (to be honest, because we were in relaxed/holiday mode with probably too many Ouzo's under our belt), I found the premium islands not cheap (paxos etc) but didn't really expect them to be (is a beautiful place, popular etc)

If you don't contacts there (I mean close ones), I do think remotely managing it would be a real challenge (place still revolves around cash, mates rates and barter for maximum cost efficiency - and that only increases in tough times

What amazed me was the number of Aussies that spend 6 months in either location - many have been doing it for 20+ years and there simple argument is "I don't want to do winters" :)

Summary - could I live there, in a heart beat. Would I invest remotely, not without local support/knowledge

    cheers

That would be pretty awesome. Even 3 months.
I've done 3 Summers in a row, really didn't miss Winter.
Got friends who do it in Spain.

How's the crime rate traveling? I hear that other parts of Europe are getting worse atm due to illegal immigrants.

The islands are Ok as far as I know. The main ones were moving on towards their destination in Germany or Scandinavia.
A lot are getting stuck in Greece as other countries have closed their borders.

When we were in lesbos, bout 1000 a day were coming across on boats. They had nothing, but we're so happy to be alive. Can't comment on the rest of Greece, but no crime to any of the locals in the villages.

Agree. All round it sounds like a poor investment but might make a great base for regular European holidays!

Really? This is real estate 101 - buy when the market is low.

Is it hard to get 6 month visas? I thought in 99% of the world tourist visas were 3 months.

A client of mine has an Albanian squatter on one of his Greek properties.

    Delightful.
Probably a risk of Syrians - or people pretending to be Syrian refugees.
