You mean personal reference? Personal references are standard. professional references are from the employer. Yes we ask for all of them. Most weight being given to rent history.
Was probably asking you to be a professional reference because the last PM or employer wouldn't give him one. If not, why not? Need to consider everything on an application including all forms of references and use good judgement to weight accordingly.
