    Interesting investment class... no cashflow, no intrinsic value, purely speculative growth prospects. However, limited supply, growing population of vain people, and I believe not generally subject to CGT.

    Perhaps a good bet if you believe in asset price inflation coming in the medium term?
    However, what about the long-term trends? Reduced car ownership, ride/car sharing, self-driving...?

    Well, they are called 'vanity plates'...!
    A bit tongue in cheek :) Just saying they have become more popular over time.

    No wonder he got away with it.

    LGOPNR = Leg opener

    I once worked with a corporate regulator. There was a company with the name werafakawi. Once the regulator realised this, the name was revoked.

    Crazy price for a number plate. Surely you'd have to take it with you when you park anywhere?

    What happens if someone drills the bolts to get them off the car? If they are genuinely old, then a replacement isn't going to be worth the same, is it (are they)?

    Insurance doesn’t give you back a unique item. You can get a copy but it’s not the same... hence my question as to whether you would risk leaving it on the car. I wouldn’t.

    Number plates are always "owned" by Govt. The user possesses a right of use. In many states that plate can be reprinted (eg NSW = Myplates.com.au) but a duplicate would be illegal and of no use to a buyer other than for display. But the owner of that right does have the ability to have plates reprinted in different styles and colours to match and enhance a vehicle. The value occurs with ownership AND rights to use which are an annual license fee.

    Does CGT apply to a sale of a plate ?
    It may. If the original owner applies then the cost is for a right to use. It is annual but exists until it lapses or is cancelled by police or RMS or the owner. In this case the cost is under $10,000 and therefore CGT does not apply to a sale. The cost of the plate is $XX a year. However, if the buyer acquires by buying an existing plate that may be different if the cost exceeds $10,000. Any profit on sale is assessable as a CGT event. Any loss is disregarded. The plate cannot be depreciated as it is a CGT asset.

    Stealing $2M number plate would be pretty pointless
