We used a wax on our oak veneer kitchen benchtops at home (all from Ikea) but always have to clean up and spills/moisture quickly so it doesn't soak in. I would use something like marine varnish if I had timber benchtops/doors in an IP.

I had a painter sand and spray the old pine doors on a kitchen at my IP in white and then I covered the old mosiac tile bench tops with merbau and lacquared.

    The white is the money.
What an interesting space! (At 6'3", I don't think I could use that kitchen though)
