    Genuine genetic intolerance. Apparently affects 30% of those with strong Anglo Saxon heritage to varying degrees as it's an item that was never in the diet until the last few hundred years

    I'm strongly intolerant ... my mum slightly ... aunt severe ... great grandmother crippling ... it's nightshade intolerance.

    Since I stopped eating them ... varicose veins cleared up and disappeared (had had legs treated three times with blocker needles and surgery, and heading for a fourth due to throbbing pain), heart palpitations ceased, constant (lifetime) lethargy overcome and gout now non existent ... and boy, don't I know it when I slip up

    I saw the said movie a few weeks back and I’ve tried a few veggie recipes.. in particular, from ‘The Happy Cookbook’ by Lola Berry. She has a section on patties;
    Broccoli and chickpea patties with Tahini and lime dressing.
    Zucchini fritters with cashew, mint and lime aioli.
    Mums baked salmon patties with mashed avo.
    Sweet potato and quinoa patties with green tahini and lime dressing.

    The salmon patties were amazing with dill mixed through.. I could never go full vegetarian, pescatarian at best.

    Lola Berry has some great recipes:)

    Jokes aside my wife was vegetarian (but included many purely vegan meals) for around 20 years up till around 7 - 8 years ago when she began eating animal food again. Unfortunately given she worked and I didn’t during most of this time I did the majority of the cooking. Must admit it was relief when she started eating animal protein again. I actually love vegan food but not as my entire diet.

    I'm also finding it hard to go total vegan but I've cut back significantly on my meat intake. Also bought a blender recently and found its easier to drink my vegetables with the frozen bags of green smoothie in Coles and Woolies.

    Nobody ate a complete plant based diet in human evolutionary history of hundreds of thousands of years .. our guts are built for hunter, gatherer food… our bodies can’t efficiently digest meal sized amounts of plant matter .. cows, goats, sheep have drastically different digestive system .. unless you have the ability to chew your cud or regurgitate already eaten food, you can’t efficiently live off just plant food!!

    I guess I just don't want something to die for me to eat it, when I have a choice. So I choose vegetable matter and top up my protein needs with a supplement.

    Except fish - they are dead inside already.

    Very true - but we also didn't eat meat every day ... the diet was basically plant based with gut extending feasting on the occasional mammoth.

    That said - we were also not created to eat the same foods year round - which is causing all sorts of allergies and gut issues. Eat seasonal - eat so much of the foods in season so that you can't stand the sight of it - move onto next season's food - rinse repeat - by the time the earth does a full year sun rotation one is hanging out for the initial seasons' foods again

    We are basically being fed mass produced food including ‘industrially produced fruit and veges’ .. mass grown fruits and vegetables are as bad as processed food in some instances but we have been conditioned by ‘mass marketing’ to believe that fruits are good for us…. humans never had multiple high fructose in abundance until a century ago .. I also get shocked by star ratings given by health departments to junk food .. sugary drinks and cereals getting 5 stars is misleading… eating by star ratings is a quick sure way to pick a chronic inflammatory disease but ofcouse Pharma has you covered there with symptoms managing lifelong drugs.

    Eat less, eat for energy and not taste .. eat what your ancestors ate .. cut sugars to zero (humans didn’t have sugar during 99.9999% of their time on this earth .. reduce fructose.. get your calories from a vast range of foods and stay away from fads (they are almost always cleverly masked commercial projects).

    I have been eating whole food plant based vegan for 2 1/2 years now, and there is no way I'm going back to eating animal products.

    You can eat all of this in moderation without a worry:

    Veggies
    Fruit
    Grains and Pulses
    Meat (I don't since I am a vegetarian)
    Eggs
    Saturated fat

    ONLY worry about the following and completely AVOID it from your diet. You WILL lost weight, feel more energetic AND see a drastic improvement in your health

    ADDED SUGAR
    Highly processed food
    As much as possible try to avoid polyunsaturated fat (avoid food prepared in vegetable oils - canola, sunflower, corn etc. Use better substitute cooking oils)

    Intermittent fasting has been excellent for my health. My husband does 36 hours fasts twice a month. I am a wimp, I can manage 16 hours every day. I struggle to do 18 hours.

    I now weigh 56kgs (used to be 70kg 15 years ago) and I am 170cm tall. I lost around 10kgs in 8 months by simply giving up added sugar in my diet. Try it and report back :)

    Tempting - but I made a batch of macadamia nut and white chocolate cookies last night ... :D

    Oh, and yet another 2 litres of cucumber pickles this morning (who in their right mind plants more than one cucumber vine!) that has equal amounts of vinegar and sugar in the mix

    I do avoid most processed foods tho - is cheese considered processed? - preferring to make from scratch

    And having said that I had an ice cream cone as it was hot here :sigh:

    But I managed to fast for 18 hours after an early dinner last evening. Just had my lunch. Will go and do some gardening now :)

    The Camerons founded Verdient Foods, whose facility in Saskatchewan processes plant proteins used to make products like pasta, sauces and butters and recently entered into a joint venture with U.S.-based refiner Ingredion Inc. Cameron Family Farms in the countryside of South Wairarapa in New Zealand grows crops, vegetables and fruit. The couple’s vision for a vertically integrated food company even extends to breeding their own seeds.

    “With the Beyond (Meat) IPO, you’re in the right place at a unique time in human history,” said Barry Didato, who advises the Camerons. “Plant-based food is the internet in 1994.”

    It's important how food is cooked.
    Nightshades need to be cooked long.
    Tomatoe sauce need to boil and then simmer and for an hour to taste good and be healthier.
    Same with eggplants, they should be boiled for at least 5 mins before doing anything else with them.
    Beans, Chickpeas should be soaked in water from the previous day before cooked.
    Take the seeds out of capsicum, tomatoes and chillies.
    This is normal for traditional southern EU cooking, these days everyone is in a hurry.

    Ditto that in my home. Everything is cooked the traditional way. Kidney beans, chickpeas etc are soaked overnight before being pressure cooked.

    Also aiming to become self sufficient wrt fresh produce. Getting a good crop of fruits since a year now. Trying to do the same with veggies :))

    The problem with many vegetarian based meat substitutes is they are heavily processed and so are many gluten free products and some boxed cereals. For long term health I think that having a variety of natural foods is the way to go as well as working out what is best for the individual for their situation. Some of the female athletes I have worked with who went vegan ended up with dangerously low level of B12 which was affecting their heart function, so much that they needed an injection, where as others had no issues.
    I think the biggest debate at present is the rating of grains, bread and cereals. Nutrition Australia have a pie chart that recommend equal consumption of this food group to vegetables for overall long term well being, whereas there are others who try to limit these carbohydrates and go keto. I find keto very hard to do because eating lots of fats can be hard to digest and heavy on the liver and gall bladder. Eating lots of protein could put extra load on your kidneys. Eating healthy grains is linked to better fibre consumption which is meant to help with health because it fills you up and cleans the system unless you suffer from celiac disease or intolerance,
