What’s interesting is we still have no cure for HIV which is a virus. Yet we have vaccines for covid true story Had a scenario last week where someone I know got diagnosed with HIV. Devastating news. however got retested and we just found out yesterday that the medical clinic accidently gave the wrong results and he does not have HIV. Hard to believe this happened
Because Covid is similar to other respiratory viruses that they've been working on for a very long time. HIV is totally unrelated. Not hard at all to believe there might be human error.
We have no cure for influenza either, which manages to kill an estimated 500,000 people worldwide every year. We do, however, have vaccines which provide excellent protection - and our flu deaths in Australia are much lower than in many other countries.
This is good The epidemic mentioned can be managed, not necessarily a death sentence. Problem is most wont
The thread is about the next pandemic. HIV is not a pandemic. There are less than 1,000 notifications of HIV in Australia annually, and that's dropping. That's not to say that it's not a serious disease or that it's not transmissible. It is both. But it's not easily transmissible. A very big key is education of people likely to be infected - something which has been very effective to date.
Right I became an expert on HIV. Problem with HIV is there is a huge stigma in our society for anyone who has this virus. Government also place anyone with HIV on a data base, understandable
Yes, and that's not inconsistent with my number. There were many more infections years ago, and we've done a good job of keeping so many people alive. HIV is not regarded as a pandemic in Australia now.
Some authors consider HIV to be a global pandemic - although the WHO classifies it as a "global epidemic", probably because case numbers aren't growing. From wikipedia: The 2015 Global Burden of Disease Study, in a report published in The Lancet, estimated that the global incidence of HIV infection peaked in 1997 at 3.3 million per year. Global incidence fell rapidly from 1997 to 2005, to about 2.6 million per year, but remained stable from 2005 to 2015. I know back in the 80s when it first became prevalent, it was more likely to be considered a pandemic given it was new and very scary. There is a strong correlation between drug use and the spread of HIV - which I believe occurs from the use of shared needles - although the percentage of infections via this vector seems to be quite variable based on country. The majority of infections still occur in gay and bisexual men: 69% in the US in 2018 according to the CDC - although they also report that 24% of new infections in 2018 were in hetrosexuals (8% hetrosexual men + 16% hetrosexual women). These statistics will vary greatly by country.
The term Pandemic comes from the same source as the word Pandemonium ... guess it just depends whether we're people or demons pandemic – from the Greek pan meaning all and demos the people pandemonium – from the Greek all the demons
