We are going to fly to Melbourne for a holiday and hire a car to drive home.

If we stay centrally, is there one airport we should fly into over another?

We would prefer to grab a train(?) or shuttle to get from airport to the city in preference to a taxi or uber.

Tullamarine would be a better choice.

No train to city, but we have skybus shuttle to city I think its $18 one-way.

No train, only skybus and it's about $15 or something one way. Better to hire a car and drive especially if you're not alone

You have a choice of airline. Jetstar flies to Avalon, everybody else to Tullamarine. So only fly Jetstar if the fare is better than the others. One way bus transfers from Avalon are about $22.

    I recommend Essendon Airport.

I think you would only find bombers there- and not very good ones at that.

For most people Tulla is more convenient if you're in Melbourne. It's quicker and closer for almost everyone.

I can see a time when Avalon will become the preferred airport, probably in 10-20 years. Let's face it, Tulla will probably never get a train line. Avalon already has a rail line go right past, it wouldn't take much to have it connect to the terminal.

We want to stop off at our favourite place (Katoomba) on the way home and will hire a car so we can collect anything we might need (antiques). :D:p

What do we need to ensure that we see in Melbourne?

We are museum, art gallery, old mansion type of tourists.

I'll google of course, but for those on the ground, what would be amazing to see?

I've booked an AirBNB in Fitzroy.

I've booked Book of Mormon. We planned on seeing this in NY but ended up not seeing it there.

I remember Cook's cottage and a flower clock from when I was about 10 years old.

State Library, Shrine (IME well worth taking the free tour - learned loads I'd never have got on my own), Immigration Museum. On a nice day take a boat ride to Williamstown and back. A little further out, Werribee Mansion. If they're of particular interest to you, Fox Car Collection is open Tues/Wed/Sat FOX CLASSIC CAR COLLECTION , Railway Museum (where I am a volunteer) Sats ARHS Newport Railway Museum .

I used to love Melbourne Museum when I was younger. Apparently now it's moved, and is the largest museum in the southern hemisphere.

The hop on hop off bus can be a good way of getting an overview and getting around. Make sure though there's a frequent service when you're going. I was recently in a place where they were 45 minutes apart, so waiting could be a pain.
