I have pet insurance, but sadly this is turning out to be a waste of money........ read the fine print when doing your research with this. Its a maze

The fine print basically says - Unless you took insurance when the pet was a new puppy we assume its a pre-xisting condition and will fight you to the death to never pay or use a formula that erodes the benefit to almost the same as the excess. And if the pet has a condition which it was likely born with we wont pay that either.

My daughter and boyfriend just had their 4 year old Lab diagnosed with stage 5 cancer. Heartbreaking, but worse the policy is pretty much useless, they will be stuck with very expensive treatment

I lodged claim for my dog, bone stuck in throat, $3000 later and months of fighting this, they finally paid, but it was extremely stressful dealing with this

I have a BIL currently admitted as a private patient to a large public hospital in NSW.

He has been there for 5 days, been shifted around to three different wards in this time, had a MRI done last Friday but no-one can interpret the results, the only doctor to see him is one who butchered him two years ago when he had a similar issue (told the hospital he doesn’t want that doctor to touch him), ...

In his words, utter chaos. He is thinking he should just go home.

    No benefits for him.

Why doesn’t he just to a private hospital if it’s so bad?

That is what I would do but he is one of those people who thinks he will get better health care in the public system, especially as a private patient .

Are you sure its not the 60% additional premium he would have to pay:(, dependent on age.;) I am assuming he is not a young man

Another option to stop the exodus from private health insurance is cut the costs for under 55. Its not washing down too well

A lot of cross-subsidisation in PHI. Couple policy rates are apparently the same as for a family of 10. Young subsidise the old.

I guess it is the same with Medicare though?
It'll be interesting to see if this stays, given the changes in superannuation policies for similar reasons.

Its needs to be fairer, otherwise it just wont be viable. Younger age group are not buying the con job

How do you stop the youth exodus from private health insurance? Cut premiums for under-55s

More the case older people wait 12mths and rip into a claim on the 13th months with the surgeon they consulted a year earlier and later cancel the policy once the claim is done. Younger people see the scam and question why they pay the same premium as a 73 year old with two dud hips. IMO a lifetime pre-existing condition clause should be involved so that claims are treated as aggressively as travel insurance. That way younger members may get fairer premiums and we arent all paying for age related claims for members of 1 year standing. the Medicare levy sucharge forces me to keep funding this scam.

I reckon new members after age 55 should pay a vastly higher premium that has a clawback. eg they pay 3 times all other members. If they cancel cover then 50% of claims made while insured become due
