I've not read the link, but ultimately it doesn't matter if you are bidding against yourself if you don't reach the reserve. After that, it does matter.

The article doesn't say where the property is

I'd be curious to see if he overpaid or not.

You can behave like a turkey at auction but if you're overpaying then you'd just get sore arma

Happens often, I see often at auctions. Many unsuspecting buyers at auctions are made to be chop suey.

What I find truly bizarre about this story is the number of people wearing top hats and long coats to the auction. Is this normal hipster Melbs or was there some kind of time warp?

yes, you will soon be seeing this kinda stuff in Brisbane. A boom is inevitable and buyers will literally fall over themselves ( as this fool did) to secure property.

Article quotes the buyer stating that it was a strategy, only kept the increases to $1-2k not $10-20k, threw everyone off including the auctioneer and he only was going to do it until it hit his maximum level.

Great result hats off to him for doing something different and getting the result.

Ha ha, I have not read it, but this is no BS.... last year or year before, I was at auction, I already looked at block details etc, young bloke asked me outside which unit was the auction, I showed him which place, he went in 10 min prior, so no research.

He bid against himself, 3 times after being the highest bidder, agent kept yelling out how beneficial it was to buy under auction conditions, he went up 40 something k against his own high bid on a 300 odd k value property.

    Nuts

Lol maybe making a handful of 1k bids against himself ended up saving him a lot more than he spent by confusing other bidders who may have stopped bidding out of confusing of what was going on lol
Title makes him sound like an ass, but by the explanation in the article, it seems like it might be a clever tactic and at a very cost effective price (0.05% per bid).

Slowing down bids and freaking out other people are legit tactics. Brave man.

Maybe some of the bidders held back on account of the fact that he seemed a bit ‘not quite right’, cos deep down some investors are real softies.
I was losing bidder at an auction years ago in a low socio suburb and pulled up way short of my target based on who I saw bidding against me. I judged her to be a working class single mum in a flanny shirt with steely determination and she wanted it right from the first bid. Just didn’t have the heart to take it away from her. What’s the point in giving to charity if we can’t do a few good deeds now and then in daily life?

Call me crazy but If I had to blindly choose one to follow in an auction I'd pick the hasidic Jew over the journo likely significantly poorer

I did similarly at a pickles car auction. I found the car I wanted. I knew exactly how much I'm prepared to go up to. So I kept my hand (not two) up in the air.
Auctioneer said "Sir, we already have your bid". No one else raised their hand after that. They knew I wasn't going to stop. It worked :)
