Datto, are you sure Commodore 64s and Amigas will still work with flat screen TVs, or will this be an impediment to your goals?

On the other hand, they all have smart phones...

Yeah I reckon it is. Look at the tail light and all the plastic that's melted from the boot area, looks like a VT.

I know a girl who does the whole social media entertainer business - with a channel on Youtube, instagram etc. Apparently there's bugger all money in the advertising for the most part - the big dollars come in from sponsorship/product placement, but to get to that point you need a good base of subscribers/followers to show your 'market'.

Not really - it's more about giving value before monetisation. Once that value is there and you've built up a strong base, it's just a case of seeding in the product placement/sponsorship.

You need to look at what others in similar areas (ie non-fiction, specialist area) have done. An Australian example is Dave Jones who has YouTube, merchandise, forum, advertising and more. His specialist area is electronic engineering.

My experience is that website ads are a small pittance, YouTube ads are a slightly bigger pittance but non-fiction ebooks can do well (ie good income for a sideline).

But there are lots of poorly selling and poorly marketed ebooks. To get any success you need a good online profile. Eg popular website, YouTube channel and frequent participation in specialist online forums (like this but for your interest). But the silver lining is that your marketing is basically free and your customers will be your biggest evangelists.

    Exactly.

The few who do actually successfully make a living from it are people who managed to earn the trust/attention from a captive and engaged audience. The level of engagement also greatly affects the ability of someone to earn a good income, ie someone with 100k really engaged followerw/fans will be more valuable to a brand looking to do a tie-up than the next person we with 200k fans who don't seem to care all that much.

Starting out from zero and looking to monetise immediately or fairly early on is very rarely a successful strategy unless we'we're talking someone truly remarkable

Dude, here is a great resource on monetization.

    Day 9 - Monetization

It covers all the different types of websites you can have and the best monetization strategies possible. I'm sure it will give you plenty of ideas.

What blogging platform/website have you found to be the best to use. Is there a cost involved or is it free to setup a blog and post your content

JDM LYFE - there is a fairly big following amongst the youth for imported and modified Jap cars.

I have one myself just to feel young haha!

I use Wordpress which is a free download.

You can have your blog hosted free on either Blogger or Wordpress.com

I prefer to have my own domain which does involve both the cost of a domain and hosting which should cost less than $150.

If you get some traction (Say 2,000 Visits a month) security becomes an issue this costs me another couple of hundred $.

There is money to be had in every industry. How much depends.
To me it seems you have not got your "why" worked out yet.
A niche thought out, an offerering, a value add.

Seems you are a little disjointed at present and need to find some focus and pursue and follow through with one avenue first. Get the income stream correct from one area before trying to build a second.

These days having or not having certain genitalia doesn't necessarily make you a man or a woman either..
