Jan Somers was on the Property Couch pod cast..

We were fortunate to find Jan's book and Somersoft forums early in our journey which has been life changing personally!

So great to get perspective. She said in early 80's Sydney houses were $50k odd against Brisbane's 25k...

During the two years when negative gearing abolished period she couldn't understand why people weren't buying property as the properties were positive even without trying..

    Pod Cast Link

    Enjoy

    Talked mostly about her journey.

She gets asked when is a good time to buy? Right Now! is her response

Some rought notes I jotted down...
    • If you know exactly how much you're worth, you're not worth very much
    • She wants to know about any expenses more than $100
    • Properties had to be close to a shop, station, infrastructure....but at the same time you never quite know, a suburb may have a really good bus service. She's pedantic about the aspect (north east facing works very well in Australia on east coast)
    • The living area has to have that kind of element. Else fork out on the air con so you can buy anywhere
    • 1972 - Her first purchase $12k first home middle of nowhere in Kippa-ring / Redcliffe..
    • She questions people saying we want near Bondi beach, ensuite, triple garage
    • Housing affordability - not so much an issue but expectations
    • Housing affordability has always been an issue people have talked about
    • It's ALWAYS been hard to buy property
    • If you are committed enough you'd be able to do it
    • She did become a broker in 1980s. She just had to fill a former and get a license. She left it as she didn't want to recommend a product based on higher comissions
    • She takes business class trips just for comfort but lives a simple life
    • Somersoft took a lot of effort to manage and they didn't want to charge for advertising
    • Property Chat gets a mention
    Outstanding integrity..

"north east facing "- Is it really a big deal? Our house is East facing but the back rooms get really hot. It doesn't matter which way we face, we will have 1/4th of the house facing the West.

Thanks for sharing, like many of us her More Wealth from residential Property book was one of the first I read.
    The basic principles never change.

Were they all from the part 1? I don't remember listening all those points you jotted down.

If you ever get the chance to met Jan and Ian Somers, you will find that not only do they have high integrity but they are one of the most meekest, humble and helpful couple you will ever meet.

My success is so indebted to them. No amount of money would repay them for their help over the years

Stumbled across her 2 part podcast- thoroughly enjoying and insightful to how much property has come from the early 80s. $25k for a Brisbane house is hard to fathom for a Millenial... Also bought her book- should be insightful reading

Integrity is so important and the Somers have maintained the respect they gained.

Really enjoyed Steve McKnight's book and had a lot of respect as I learnt - but started to lose that as the spam and bait emails kept coming. Don't follow him at all anymore.

Would love to just take Jan and her husband to lunch one day and have a chat.

I grew up in Kippa-Ring, where they bought their first house!
