Given the fact he's done what he's done, has he passed the point of no return? Can he stay in power post war? Has his relationship with the rest of the world changed forever? Should he/will he be tried for war crimes?

    What's your view.

I think so. But he's not the kind of degenerate who can loose face, so really concerned about what is still to unfold.

He will be done I think within next 5 years. Even if he "wins" this war.

One positive about all this is China will recalibrate their foreign policy. I hope!

This is what worries me. He's old, has health issues, so maybe this is his last hurrah, and he's willing to go all out and bugger the consequences.

No way.. he's a dictator that makes his own rules.. he'll be in charge until he decides he wants to step down. Until then he will assassinate/imprison anyone that gets in his way.

He recently passed a law that will see him through till 2036.. when that comes around and he wants to stay longer, he'll change the law again.

Vladimir Putin passes law that may keep him in office until 2036

No - He will probably stay on.
If Putin gets trial as a war criminal.
Then all the war the USA president have gone in should be put in the same lens.
Otherwise it is just pot calling out the kettle black.

    No.
Pretty sure russian law allows him stay for 2 more terms (12 years or so?)..unless the Russian people really gather strongly to enforce a change, but even then he will flex his muscles on them as he has done in the past..he will find some excuse to squash any real opposition.
The question of past point of no return is not whether his career continues , its more now that he is invested in this, how far will he go?
Regarding war crimes ..sure the west will accuse him for abc...but he will not care. Not cared in the past, wont care in the future. Regarding sending Russian economy into the dark ages (will take some time for this to fully happen, but it will bite hard), he will simply blame the west (and indeed most of the world). He will control that narrative via state owned media. This is dictator 101 school. He has graduated top of his class.

That's the 64 million dollar question. Given the fact he's not worried about killing civilians now and his 16 mile military convoy is heading for the capital ....I'd say he's got a lot more killing and destruction on the agenda.

Yes..this is a worry. He is old. The demands of thr job are huge mentally and physically with such a large country.
It could be that he wants to leave a legacy....for all the wrong reasons , but a legacy nonetheless.

The sanctions placed on Russia are hard hitting the poor, the rich, well they are rich and will flee Russia with their money in the worst case scenario. I don't see him being able to hold power if this war continues at a steady rate. He certainly didn't count on Ukraine putting up the resistance they did, and other Eu countries are getting onboard with more sanctions.

Nobody knows what Putin's end game is going to be, but it's in the backyard of Eastern Europe and Ukraine could be them eventually.

I think regardless of the outcome of this particular situation, he will be able to persist for a time.

But I think the issue is going to be what happens after? He has pretty much eliminated any other potentially "good" leaders in Russia as they became a threat to him, so what kind of fringe/incompetent puppet is going to emerge from his ashes?

He's a criminal leader and will get away with what he's done.

Other criminal leaders have got away with their criminal acts so why shouldn't Putin eg now lets see...Blair, Howard, Bush, Jinping, Suharto etc etc

That long of a military convoy just says logistic nightmare. If NATO really wanted to get involved, its a sitting duck.

How dare you ICC to even think about it.

Yes thats a positive. Shows China the west can toughen up if they have to.
But Ukraine is a lot closer to wealthy allies than Taiwan (and Australia) is. They may not be so motivated to support a pacific war

Agree with this. Maybe not Afghanistan as that was justified but definitely iraq which was just as bad as ukraine.

Guess that's a fair comment but to put it as simplistically as possible, the core difference is that the US was going after the 'bad guys' and Russia is bombing the 'good guys'.

Really now... just wow.. o_O Let me ask the people who's country was bombed and attacked by outsider?
Whoever bombs anyone is the bad guy in the eye of the occupied under attack country.

I think Putin has more to worry about his own generals or worse still the intelligence services turning on him. Once the people turn..it will get interesting..

The fact that this sort of info was leaked to Ukraine forces..is a clear indication some high level levels within the armed forces and russian intelligenc don't like him....
