    You've hit the nail on the head with that post (maybe use a hammer rather than the post :confused:).

    Some of the field of property that I work in is extremely specialised so networks are essential - a role cropped up requiring a corporate licensee (referral from an old colleague to another - I have dealt with/kept in contact with both for a long time on and off).

    That led to more work in an extremely specialist role (Geez I must know stuff ;))

    Then leveraging off my contacts to get the approvals which can take eons.

    None of it comes naturally but with with reputation and mutual communication not just "what's in it for me? "

    That's it. Both parties benefit.

    Most my of RE and business transactions have been with the understanding of let's see if we can make it work for us both. Whether it's with agents, planners, builders, consultants etc. And the amount of good business I have been able to accomplish has mostly been through mutualistically beneficial relationships.

    LOL assuming you're referring to my previously deleted post.
    Been getting some texts about that.

    Another thing is trying to pull teeth.
    A mentor of mine calls it 'overcooking the deal'.

    When you want to take your pound of flesh from every opportunity, it can leave so little, it kills the deal.

    Let everyone get a good share, and when the next opportunity comes along, the chance to get a good slice for you will come.

    And lets face it. The world isn't fair. Sometimes it doesn't happen. Sometimes you get cut out of a deal that has more than enough to go around. That's when you learn which relationships you want to keep nurturing, and which to let wither.

    I've met so many people that hold on-to that one time they got burnt and have become one-man-islands. Bitter, overly-cautious, and bull-dogs when it comes to brokering an opportunity.

    You end up trampling the good people, and surrounding yourself with other bull-dogs, or worse, sharks. Every interaction takes so much more energy. Constantly watching your back. What a way to live. Works for some. Definitely not for me.

    The amount of 'free' work that many of the directors of companies that I have worked with performed over the years would pay off with either select tender nominations, inside running or handed on a plate situations. Admittedly, when you got the project, you wouldn't do it at 'mates rates' but it would be payback for the assistance provided.

    Are you familiar with the "archetypes" in Malcolm Galdwell's "Tipping Point"? (Maven, Connector, Sales). You sound like being comfortable with being a connector. My natural trait is more in the Maven (deep subject matter expertise) that Connectors and Sales access to get trusted information quickly. How does that resonate for you as a description?

    Had a good read on it. Hadn't heard of it before.

    I do love reading about all the different personality types, and doing the tests.

    My thoughts? We are 3-dimensional beings, and definition limits our capabilities.

    It has advantages. Definition provides certainty. But damn those limitations.

    It resonates. I'm a connector 100%. Similarly, I'm a Maven in certain knowledge areas, and a Salesman at times (or all the time, according to my high school teacher). Jumping between them as required.

    The more I do it, and the trickier the situations, the better I get at it.

    One may occur as being more natural than another. Though what I'm talking about is being genuine, and live life in a posture of learning. Connector, Maven, or Salesman.

    Absolutely works. Believe it or not, I'm quite introverted. But when I realised the value in networking with others and playing the part, I came out of my shell very quickly.

    Big time underrated in Brisbane.

    It is a town of who you know.

    I got my job through networking.

    I get work on the side through people I know.
