Nah it's actually the best app I've found for getting work done. Those tradies pay for leads because it saves them from paying for advertising. With Hipages they know the customer is serious and planning to proceed with the job in the near future

    1. Happy to take that punt provided I buy from CNW.
    2. Past experience of hire hasn't seen me overcharged, and recent rates are pretty consistent with past paid rates.

What about the small local friendly labour hire firms rather than the BIG national electrical franchise chains. Think we can both disagree to agree, it's important to support good people

    I think its fair
    Sparky is disconnecting Hardwired transformers
    Re connecting plug socket bases
Supplying and installing new downlights so now they now simply plug in
If you have to change them in years to come you will be able to replace them yourself

    In that case, it's:
    • Pull the fuse
    • Pull out light
    • Undo two screws (and potentially one extra one for the cover)
    • Do up two screws (and potentially one extra one for the cover)
    • Push them back in
    5 minutes per light.

I would get another quote, get 2 if that puts your mind at ease.

Some trades companies price on the high end, others on the lower end.
You won't know from internet comments until another licensed electrician comes and quotes on the same job.

Not many sparkies would come to your house to qoute this. Would be waste of time. It's all per point pricing over the phone with some conditions attached. I Would be exactly the same price minus the 69 fee.
I would give a 7 year warranty on the lights I use.
    So there you go OP

Why is there a plug base and not hardwired?

Most of the fittings I've seen on sale come with a plug. I assume that it's so the electrician can do the fit off leaving the downlighters to be fixed by at the end of the job by anyone able to put a plug in a socket.

While they do come with plugs, you can unscrew it for all the ones I've seen.
If it's not stipulated by AS3000, I'd just do what I suggested and not worry about the socket.

I do agree with you that you pay peanuts, you might get monkeys, but sorry, to me this is still a monkey job. This is about as simple as electrical jobs get (unless you have to pull new cables for some reason).

I'm not advocating getting unlicensed electrical work done, but anyone that managed to get their licence can surely do this blindfolded!

I should note that while I'm not an electrician, I am a mechatronics engineer hold a cert 3 in electronics technology, so do have a rudimentary understanding of what I'm talking about.

Has any one used the Vic government rebate - looks like you use the accredited providers to replace Halogen with LED lights - if so how did the process work and would you recommend a supplier?

During our electrical inspection the answer to the question "Are there halogen downlights that could cause a fire risk" - was "Yes" - The report itself has no failed items though. We have 53 90mm lights. So if there is a fire then would that make us liable?

    Lighting

Would this qualify as a deductible expense or is it capital improvement?

Just enough to know about AS3000, but ignore the Electrical Safety act which prohibits unlicensed Electrical work. (Like disconnecting the lighting transformer).
Doing unlicensed Electrical work opens you up to prosecution and voiding your insurance. As well as voiding your warranty.

There is also no guarantee the existing transformer would be compatible with the new light.
If the light comes with a lead and no transformer it is a good bet the light has an in built transformer.
