In general, are you allowed to cut down trees in the backyard of a townhouse?

I know every complex has different rules but generally speaking, is anything in the backyard usually fair game?

    No, not fair game.

You have to ask your Council. For large (specified circumference) trees you will need a permit.

I believe there are no rules against burning them down though.

 (Please seek advice before doing anything because you might end up in jail if you listen to people like me)

Na they're more like shrubs. The tallest is like 30-45cm higher than the fence line.

The rules can vary from one council to another, but native trees and those over a certain size are often protected. Small shrubs probably aren't a problem, but best to ask the council if you're unsure.

Yes as has been said, it depends on the type of tree also. Obviously you can't undo it so just call the relevant department in your local council first to avoid a fine!
