Labor are pushing to restrict student visas too, which are often a way for migrants to enter Australia for the purpose of working.

The PR visas have been getting progressively more difficult in recent years. The official points score for an invite has risen from 60 to 65, though in reality it's 70 for most applicants.

Then there's talk of dispersing migrants around regional areas, rather than concentrating them in Sydney and Melbourne.

Some of the attempts at reform have failed. The government wanted to raise the requirements for a contributory parent visa, but this was voted down in the Senate. (These are hugely expensive, with a likely lifetime expense of $300,000 per arrival, or $3 billion per year for the full quota.)

I can see it reducing pressure on Sydney and Melbourne, as these are where most migrants end up. (Disclosure: I'm a migrant living in Melbourne.)

Yes immigration had most impact on Sydney on way up, so if it slows...

This article came up in my newsfeed this morning. Seems like a lot of people were lured to Canberra on the promise of sponsorship before the rules changed.

Chandan was days from qualifying for a visa. Then the rules changed

The immigration rules tend to be changed suddenly and without warning to prevent people who might no longer qualify from applying en masse before the cut off. That said, the old system was that if you met the requirements, you'd be granted a visa regardless. Now it's on an expressions of interest basis, where the government gets to choose who comes in.

    @Marcus Yuuu

Migration had impact on a lot of states.

VIC and NSW almost the same.
The reason Sydney has an outflow of residents to Melbourne and Brisbane is because they are being squeezed by new arrivals and demand on housing, jobs and infra.

Main reason Brisbane is growing is the net Migration intake from other states.(and overseas)
This would not happen if their was no strong overseas migration into VIC and NSW.

    Isn't this a bigger bomb?

New visa could keep migrants in regional Australia

Not too sure about what exactly they are proposing, but sounds like all new migrants will have to stay out of Syd and Mel for 5 years?

Surely such a change (if implemented) would sink the property market of Syd and Mel even further, no?

But depending on what regional means, perhaps Adelaide and Tasmania could see a lift?

That's an interesting point of view, but i guess new immigrants will do this only if they have the money to buy in syd or melb and they believe prices will go up.

If they have enough money renting in regionals just for an address may become a thing

I actually wish there’s fewer immigration.
Trains are packed, so much traffic, the quality of life in our cities is actually going backwards. Wage growth is too low and barely keeping up with inflation.
Don’t let more people in unless there’s improvements in infrastructure and services.
This Population Ponzi Scheme needs to be balanced with Quality of Life.

You are on a Property investment forum.

Australia predominantly has a negative/neutral berth rate.

Property investment if not for population growth would not exist.

Although I agree the population / migration needs to be moderated. Also not concentrated to 2/3 cities.
