Fewer people living in apartments and sharing lifts and lobbies…

Maybe they weren't a majority. But there were certainly a lot of people who travelled internationally.

According to the statistics for June 1996, there were almost 4M short term departures for the 1995-96 year
3401.0 - Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia, 1996

So in terms of this discussion, that would certainly have been enough to being a pandemic into the country in that year.

In NZ, 25 years ago, getting your OE (overseas experience) was a rite of passage after finishing uni. I spent a year backpacking around Asia, before living overseas for several years.

Part of that is the same reason we refer to it as the "Spanish Flu" - governments of the time actively worked to downplay and cover up the spread, deeming it contrary to the war effort, so a lot of media were too scared to publish anything about it.

It basically became known as the Spanish Flu because the Spanish media did their job and told the truth.

The local media coverage we would have received at the time would be primarily focused on the war rather than the pandemic.

Running an agency 10 years ago, it was still risky not to be in hard-copy newspapers. Plans were not the norm either. So going back 25yrs it was newspaper and signboard as very few would be internet listed.

We were still running around between agencies to see what they'd listed or had in their shopfronts - OK at least they used Windows

I still like newspapers. Have found some great deals at times through print media.

Most of these movies are done with a forward look in time. A novel approach would be a virus with same transmissibility and infection consequences as this current virus but set in the context of pre-World Wide Web ( or just before it hit wider use ).

Let’s say set in 1992 and also with context of the various political leaders and political and economic environment of that time period.

Umm, ok this thread has taken an unexpected turn into outer space and I'm lost. I felt much more at home camping in the backyard with dad drinking tinnies.

Oh dear. I watched 'The Blob' many years ago & only recall that it was very poorly made, but never heard of 'Blobs in Space'.
