It's the same over east though. People go overseas before they see oz. They'll go to fiji before exploring their own back yard.

Aus tourism needs to get kath and kim to stay in oz for holidays!

Made sure we went on a couple Aus holidays last year over the easy o/seas south east asia option.
Did the Great Ocean Road & The Grampains - was absolutely awesome, so beautiful and in our own backyard of Aus!
Also went up to QLD - bit of it was visiting family, but went Gold Coast, Brissy, Toowoomba and Mt Tambourine which was favourite of all of them.

Usually do 1 overseas trip every 12-18 months and lots of long weekends at Byron/Sunny Coast/Gold coast here in Brisbane. Throw in the odd trip to Melbourne to see family.

You know you're doing alright when you can afford to holiday in Australia, nevermind multiple holidays ;)

Tourists are not going to go to just Perth. So add on a domestic flight to the east and the cost and times are similar. Also, flight costs are no longer a significant portion of a holiday to a western country.

Qantas are talking about direct flights from London to Perth on new 787(?)'s. That has the potential for Perth to capitalise on this and become a gateway, stopover destination for European travellers on their way to the 'big ticket' items in the east. It would be small, but it would be a start.

Perth and wa tourism isn't non existent just because it's not sydney or Melbourne.

I had a quick look at some numbers and they seem to doing ok considering the isolation.

    Wa tourism $9.3b
    Nsw tourism $25.3

    Population
    Perth 1.9m
    Sydney 4.7m

The big difference is the population outside of the capitals
    WA 2.5m
    NSW 7.4M

They are two very didn't cities but you can't just write off perth and wa, especially from the city dwellers in Sydney, melb and bris that haven't ventured out further than their coffee shop down the road.

WA (and Australia) should be capitalising on the natural beauty we have and also targeting aussies. So much of the country is untouched and should be marketed and more accessible to tourists.

You can build a "resort" and pool anywhere, why you need to fly overseas to drink cocktails and have swim i do not understand.... but we are a "simple" country :)

In what respect would you say Brisbane has come along that Perth hasn't?

If the two are somewhat analogous, but Perth is still yet to catch up with Brisbane's 'progress' might this not mean there is potential upside for the Perth market over Brisbane?

no, not a chance because Perth cycle is now in decline where Brissy is either at bottom of cycle or starting to rise albeit slow but still at a different stage of cycle

Sure you can, but when you're charging $20 a cocktail and $300 a night compared to $4 and $75 you're fighting a losing battle.

Last time I went to Perth for work a few years ago. I paid $6 for a small coffee. I thought, this is so expensive, why would people go to Perth for holiday is beyond me ......

    Cyclical as above
.also look at the other thread with the development going on in the bn CBD and immediate surrounds. Perth cannot match that at the moment.

    Also regarding potential upside
.maybe... But prices are high in Perth already and it's expensive for what it offers. Surely that will deter foreign investment a bit.

I've tried the $3 coffee in the CBD ... but I drink black, no sugar.. so far my $3 experience has been equivalent to "International Roast"...

$4 will get you something decent, or at least doesn't taste like granddad's ashtray with water..
