hi all we have a number 4 house been on the market for awhile, great house, large rooms etc.
Wondered why certain people just went straight past, appears that 4 in Cantonese and some chinese think it stands for death !
So looks like house numbers do have a lot to do with some sales ?
Anyone put some light on this please ?

I personally wouldn't buy it if there were comparable properties with a different house number (yes I am Asian.)

I am just one person though and in a seller's market I'm sure there will be plenty of people that don't factor superstition into their buying decisions :)

    I guess where do you draw the line? 13? Or 131, 1313, 87 or 111 or 666 ?

Yep, 4 = Death in Chinese and Japanese (though the JP not as superstitious).

Yeah, imagine having unit 4 of No 13 of somewhere!!

I bought one last year which was 666. Didn't worry me at all.

Though I'm not religious so god and the devil do not exist in my world :)

Haha, that's actually not too bad.

In Chinese 3 sounds similar to 'to live'. 13 sounds like 'must live'.

    What a load of nonsense!

Just plain superstition. Here, I live in a number 4, and I'll tell you what I'm going to open this umbrella and walk under this ladder in my room.

And look, there's the neighbours black cat just for good measures (incidentally, I thought I ran over that cat last week).

    Well?....Aaaaaaaarrrrrfkmeggggghhhhh, Aaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhh.......

It is a load of nonsense yes, and I'd guess your market would barely shrink by any noticeable amount. All depends on luck and whether one of the people that walked past would have offered the price you're after.

Anyone bothered by #4 would also be bothered by #4B.

I definitely agree. Don't understand the obsession with these things and stuff like Feng Shui etc.

I think that number could actually be a selling point for some people. I think I would be amused enough by that number to choose that house over the same property with a boring house number.

I was so happy to have purchased a house last year Numbered 4. No competition. Bought prior to auction and did it up. Great gain for me!

Today, I inspected a 144 house and loads of people walked through. I was the only Asian.

Hodges wears number 4 and that's what I hate. Well, Roosters won in the end. Phew.
