Was a Business Analyst before they recruited me. I have been working as a IT Project Manager with them. I need to get some certifications done, as almost all the companies are asking for one!

    The key word is; free.

We can't complain about the amount.

    No doubt; many will.

It's a great country...we get free money, and we still whine...

    "But I shoulda got more!!"

    Horse....gift...mouth.

Maybe there is a message in there - redundancies, and many full-time jobs going - to be replaced with new part-time and casual....or none at all.

Well mate....the thing is we need to learn how to compete against Asia.....unfortunately...we have leaders in govt and corporates who are very short termed focused.

Also.....the quality of leadership in Australia is pretty ordinary...most of the successful organisations are Oligopolies. ...so it would be hard not to make money.

How do you propose we do that?

The horse has bolted many years ago, and only in recent decades is is coming back to bit us in the bum...

It's not just Governments and Corporates, Sash....our Unions have been fighting extremely hard to gouge out more perks for the workers forever.

Now; that is good to a degree, but there comes a point where it needs to be a fair day's work for a fair day's pay, and some high productivity along the way.

What we now have in most industries in this Country is terrific working conditions and benefits that border on the ridiculous in terms of justified, and what the Country can afford in this Global economy.

Back in the post-WW2 era, when we were basically an isolated economy; massive farming, mining, manufacturing etc industries with little/no competition from overseas; it was arguably ok to add on holiday loading to someone's pay for monies lost from penalty shift payments...but then everyone got that payment....free money for not even being at work - more than the normal wage. Now; that is ridiculous.

There are loads of other add-ons since; least of which is redundancy pay when you leave a job, change of shift allowances, Super Guarantee, Unfair Dismissal rules, long service leave, paid public holidays, etc.

And don't forget the non-employee costs such as Worksafe Insurance, Pub Liab insurance and Payroll tax, etc.

Would you have it that the Gubb takes all these legislated wins away? Of course not; and they won't do it because they wouldn't get voted back in.

Would the Unions have it that all these perks get taken away? Of course not; their charter is more jobs, better conditions and more money for workers.

But the world has changed forever, and there are so many cheaper labor places to go to out there for much of those by-gone workplaces.

Meanwhile, we Aussies are enjoying fabulous access to overseas products online which are cheaper than here, and/or manufactured cheaper overseas than here, and so on.

I've yet to see a Union say; "Look Mr.Corporate Employer; we know you are considering closing down your operation here in Aus to move to a cheaper labor and less tax Country, and we will be losing many of our Comrades jobs as a result. How about we do this deal; we drop the holiday loading, only two weeks of paid holidays per year instead of 4, no paid public holidays, and only one week of sick pay per year - only with doctor's certificates, no paid parental leave and unfair dismissal regs -in return for staying here and continuing to operate and keep the jobs...."

Trust the market as jobs go overseas due to us not being competitive we will have to change our ways. The unions are increasingly irrelevant in a modern economy?
