    The Conversation headline:
Kevin Rudd's rental affordability scheme was a $1 billion gift to developers. Tony Abbott was right to axe it

Abbott was right to axe Rudd's rental affordability scheme, study finds

I can find a few anomalies in the article, but I'll let you guys play with this theme. I do agree that increasing Rent Assistance would suit my kids more than the current situation whereby NRAS properties are not suitable for them to live in.

A billion dollar gift to developers? Seems the institute may have missed that the properties were sold rather than held by developers . Seems they may have forgotten the GST receipts . Seems they may have forgotten the stamp duties collected at state levels . Seems they may also forget how much it would have cost Govt to fund 38,000 dwellings themselves , and the millions more per year it would cost the govt to maintain and administer them. They may also have forgotten that the coalitions very own senate economic committee found NRAS was the best way to deliver affordable rental accommodation and recommended it be reinstated . Really have to wonder ....Is there any point to this report , almost 4 years after the scheme was discontinued ?

Agree, the report writers seem to have gotten the formula the wrong way around

The institute writes wherever the coalition tells them to write . There’s a LOT of chatter at liberal state level for a new NRAS ... this was deliberately released to cool those jets

Exactly. Labor quotes Gratten Institute regularly in their policy speeches.
