Looking at options for further study.. and perhaps like some of this forum, an opportunity to get into the property side of things..

Has anyone completed this course with Deakin? I like that it is a one year course and off campus, living in a regional town makes it hard to get to the main campuses. The course outline seems fairly generic and I'm under the impression that I would need to complete an agent's rep course if I wanted to work with/in a REA?

I'm a little floored with the cost ... I suppose there are always pros and cons.. $30K is no paltry sum!

I stumbled onto this as part of a search of looking into property valuation .. most run as a 3 yr full time undergrad course which I'm not sure I can afford to do financially .. or perhaps I can but the fear always takes hold.

I did a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance majoring in Property Investment Analysis through Kaplan (it was the old Securities Institute back then). The cost was a lot lower and it tended to focus more so on commercial but was still a good course.

Very little on resi property but it was a finance qualification.

I am not sure how that ties into becoming a RE agent.

I did it all online and it helped me a lot.

What were you hoping to achieve with the course @Mavis?

Are you looking to work in the industry or is this to help you on your real estate investment journey? Or possibly both. If there are no specific outcomes to this course that you require, it to me seems a little excessive and possibly surplus to requirements. I have a Dip. of Property Services (Agency Management) which I completed online and found it to be really worth my while.

Thanks @Ross - I'm not great with finance / accounting subjects.. my biggest stumbling block :p I can try and balance my finances but anything beyond that.. i need help :)

@Mick - to be honest, i think it's both.. just looking at options out there really.. I might have to look into the course you have mentioned. I have/am in administrative side of projects and the current industry i'm working in at the moment is not very motivating.. and just thought it would be good to have something on the side that might be a little more exciting!

@Mavis $30k for a certificate seems really steep. I think my Masters was less than that. I will have to double check but certificates should be $10k yo $12k per year?

I thought it was.. I would expect that fee schedule for a 3 year course with the exception of certain fields.. That is a nice deposit for a property :D

Is there a stepping stone option? Start with a cert 4?
The private colleges charge like wounded bulls so shop around.
Tafe? They have a lot more online studies now

Ok, well here are the courses I have been looking at:-

Graduate Certificate in Project Management - Curtin University. 6 months $11,300
Graduate Diploma in Project Management - Curtin University. 12 months $22,500

Holey moley! You are right. The fees have gone up a lot!

Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) - TAFE. 12 months. $4,051.

Guess which course I really want to do?

Based on those prices, I would definitely be looking at something in the TAFE area. For example:-

Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking ($585)
Certificate IV Course in Finance and Mortgage Broking

Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking Management ($1090)
Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Management FNS50315

Certificate IV in Business Administration specialising in Finance ($2,317.50)
Certificate IV in Business Administration specialising in Finance - Training.com.au

    Certificate IV in Accounting ($1950)
Certificate IV in Accounting - Training.com.au

I have linked to the Open Learning page for each course but they are nationally recognised courses and you should be able to find a local provider. I am personally not a fan of online learning. I like classroom based. I'm old fashioned!

Anyway, there are heaps of courses around. Have a search and see what might interest you

I have completed a Dip. of Property Services (Agency Management) and have 4 units left (one semester) for Property and Finance at Curtin. The two are completely uncorrelated and lead to two seperate career opportunies.

Property and Finance at Curtin can be done 50% online (finance component online) if you work full time (as i do). So i watch all lectures online and only attend campus for exams and the mid semster test. Property and Finance Double Major degree: Curtin University

The one I am interested in doing is not project management. I would rather watch plaster dry!
