With ILS, planes will line up from 18 kilometres away and descend over land from Surfers Paradise to Coolangatta.
The proposed new flight path will mean significant aircraft noise over thousands of homes in Southport, Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Broadbeach Waters, Mermaid Beach, Mermaid Waters, Miami, and parts of Ashmore, Bundall.

Apart from new ILS, Tugun, Currumbin, and some suburbs got big noise already?
Anyone know the suburbs or area have existing plane noise already?

In my view the effect is nominal. Indeed any possible negative effect on prices, if any, would be way way countered by all the benefits that come from increased tourism and enhanced economic benefits. So in my view anything that brings in more planes, safer travel and more torisists is a big positive for prices.

There are a few suburbs that get hit hard currently, Tugun in particular and parts of Currumbin. A narrow part of Tweed too. I've noticed that unless you are right under the flight path it won't be too bad. The exception is when the planes take off and go vertical, that noise tends to spread to surrounding suburbs as a low rumble in the background, which is a lot more subdued than being in Tugun/Currumbin with a plane coming in right over head.

Not sure what the details are of the new flight path is but if it's like the current situation then being alongside the path won't be too bad. Just don't be directly under it.

Thanks. This part may be useful:

At present, there are on average 55 flights a day arriving at Gold Coast Airport, of which five can be expected to use the ILS as assumed in the environment assessment of 10% usage. Of these five flights, three arrive from northern international airports and will be required to use the ILS, regardless of weather conditions, due to specific Australian flight regulations for international aircraft.

All other flights would generally not use the ILS except in adverse weather. There are significant reasons why a pilot approaching from the south would not use the ILS under normal weather conditions.

Using the ILS requires aircraft to travel an additional distance which adds significant costs in extra fuel for the airline.

Furthermore, using the ILS under normal weather conditions would typically see flight times increased, negatively impacting the airline’s ability to keep to flight schedules.

Wow. I didn't even consider this. We're in the process of buying on the Gold Coast and the impact of this didn't even cross my mind. Looking at other forums it seems there is the potential for more noise and more flights than is being claimed?
I literally don't know anything about flight paths but I'm stressing a bit.

Rhys, history would say that those under flight path don't so much go down but just don't go up as much (IE the Tugun strip between shops and skate park).

I'd suggest it won't make a big impact, but i would be a little cautious of the beach strip tallie surf club to the tugun skate park. I'd map similar on the tweed but in reverse. Luckily that is a very narrow area.

That's great advice - it's funny how things seem bigger when you don't know what you're doing! I appreciate your insight and will do more research.

Who knows which part of Tugun is less affected by the noise? Seems the price there is still affordable compare to the neighbours

None of it. I lived there for 2 years and it drove me insane. You could sometimes here the glass doors shake in the place we were renting. The more inland parts are maybe slightly better.

Anywhere within 15km radius of any airport can be affected by noise. More commonly under approach and depart but when the airport goes into circuits due to a problem (weather, mechanical or breakdowns) the flights go low and slow and the noise goes up real fast. Sometimes at sea and others will just circuit the airport.

We live a fair distance from Richmond NSW airbase and at times the special operations command lads in helos do laps. Really noisy blackhawks. 3-4 of them. And they go on and on until midnight (rare)....When they do one lap they do 100. Twice a year maybe. One night a month back they used a water tower close to home for night assault training. Seriously noisy and yet they used no lights - I reckon they hope the enemy is deaf. EXEMPT from noise rules provided its before midnight..Grrrr

Any airport can cop that if they are prep for exercises like for the Comm Games.

We have a property at Kirra, about 1.5kms by car to the airport.

Never hear a thing although we regularly get parachutists landing on the beach in front of us. You don’t hear them either and they are great to watch.

We had a knockdown and rebuild in Tugan. A very high acoustic rating was required. Over $60k in specialised windows. RW40, double glazing was required as most windows can only achieve RW35. Just keep this in mind when you are looking for a property near the airport. Gold Coast City Council do no budge much when it comes down to it.

So, it is not so easy to build around these areas. Due diligence is required. Check out the overlay City of Gold Coast | Map search

Also, make sure you get a builder who knows how to build in these areas. You could be up for more than what you signed up with.
